MILLERSVILLE, PA. - The Millersville softball team dropped both contests at home on Friday afternoon. Game one favored the Warriors from the outset, and a late surge in game two by East Stroudsburg secured the sweep over Millersville.
GAME 1: 2-9 (ESU)
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead to start Friday's doubleheader and never looked back. Millersville attempted to respond but was unable to generate offense, ultimately dropping game one.
Game one was one to forget for Millersville. Four hits to start the game for East Stroudsburg resulted in three early runs, forcing the Marauders to make a pitching change, bringing in Ava Nelson for Nicolina Pezzone.
Millersville did not respond until the bottom of the third inning. Cameron Witte reached base with a single before being driven in by Carly Vaughan, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The Warriors extended their lead in the sixth inning, scoring four additional runs, three of which came with two outs.
Millersville answered in the bottom half of the inning as Lexi Pickett doubled and advanced to third on a ball in play. Senior Hailey Watlington then drove her in with an infield single.
East Stroudsburg added two more runs in the seventh off three hits and one error. Millersville was unable to respond, falling in game one.
GAME 2: 4-7 (ESU)
A two-out home run in the top of the seventh inning tied the game for the Warriors. They carried that momentum into the eighth inning, hitting a three-run home run to take game two from Millersville.
Starting pitcher Delaney Troxell faced an array of challenges throughout game two. The Warriors capitalized early in the second inning with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead.
Millersville had runners in scoring position in the first two innings but did not capitalize until the third. Bryn O'Connor drew a walk to start the inning and later scored on a line-drive home run by Pickett, her third of the week, giving Millersville a 2-1 lead.
The Marauders added another run in the fourth inning. Seniors Victoria Fuss and Allyson Black recorded back-to-back hits to put runners in scoring position. Troxell followed with an RBI single to score Fuss and extend the lead to 3-1.
The Warriors tied the game in the sixth inning with another home run, making it 3-3.
Millersville regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out rally. Jiana Maniscalco sparked the inning with a pinch-hit single, and Witte followed with a walk. Jocelyn Langer then singled to second base and beat the throw to first, which went wide and allowed Maniscalco to score, giving Millersville a 4-3 lead.
Troxell recorded two quick outs in the top of the seventh before facing the final batter, who hit a 1-1 pitch over the fence to tie the game.
Millersville was unable to respond in the bottom of the seventh or in extra innings. The Warriors sealed the sweep with a three-run home run in the eighth inning.
