KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Marauders fell in their final road series of the season, as a walk-off home run in game one and a pivotal third inning in game two led to a pair of PSAC East losses.
Game 1: 5-6 (KUTZ.)
The Golden Bears struck first in game one of Friday's doubleheader on a ball put in play that scored the runner from third. Millersville responded quickly with a solo home run by senior Hailey Watlington in the second inning to tie the game.
Kutztown regained the lead in the bottom of the third with three hits that resulted in two additional runs.
Jocelyn Langer opened the fourth inning with a single and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Carly Vaughan followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Langer and cutting the deficit to one run.
In the bottom of the fourth, starting pitcher Delaney Troxell hit a batter to put a runner on base before surrendering a two-run home run, extending the Golden Bears' lead to 5-2.
The Marauders continued to chip away in the fifth inning, as Allyson Black and Troxell both reached base with singles. Bryn O'Connor capitalized on a pinch-hit opportunity, delivering a single that scored Black from third.
Millersville tied the game in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Black, evening the score at five.
Troxell held Kutztown scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, but a leadoff solo home run in the seventh ultimately secured the win for the Golden Bears. Black led the offense with two hits and two RBIs.
Game 2: 1-3 (KUTZ.)
Action did not pick up until the third inning of game two, as freshman Jordyn Skarren kept the game scoreless through the opening two innings. The Golden Bears loaded the bases on walks before a line drive up the middle drove in two runs. Nicolina Pezzone entered in relief and forced a ball in play that allowed Kutztown to score its third run before working out of the inning.
Millersville generated offense in the fifth inning when Hailey Watlington led off with a single. Cecilia McBeth entered as a pinch runner and advanced to second before scoring on a single by senior Victoria Fuss, cutting the deficit to two runs.
Pezzone limited further damage in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Marauders were unable to build additional offensive momentum. Millersville outhit Kutztown, 4-3, but fell short in a 3-1 loss.
The Marauders will host Shepherd tomorrow afternoon in their final regular-season doubleheader.
