GAME 1: 8-11 (BOWIE ST.)
A game that favored the Marauders in the early innings flipped in the latter half of game one. A six-run inning by the Bulldogs in the bottom of the sixth sealed the win for Bowie State.
Millersville struck first in the top of the second inning, scoring three runs. Allyson Black and Jocelyn Langer both reached base to start the inning with a hit-by-pitch and a walk. Cameron Witte loaded the bases with a bunt single. A wild pitch allowed Black to cross the plate before Lexi Pickett drove in the other two runs to make it 3-0.
The Marauders added on in the following inning with three more runs. Carly Vaughan and Jiana Maniscalco both reached base before a Hailey Watlington double scored Vaughan. Black followed with a bunt single that scored Maniscalco from third. Langer grounded out but brought Watlington home for the third run of the inning.
Bowie State capitalized in the bottom half of the inning following a pitching change for the Marauders. Three hits resulted in two runs.
Pickett delivered again for Millersville, hitting her 13th home run of the season to start the fourth inning and extend the lead to 7-2.
The Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run home run to cut the lead to two.
Millersville scored its final run in the top of the sixth, as Pickett put the ball in play to score Witte from third and push the lead to 8-5.
The game shifted in the bottom of the sixth. Seven hits allowed by the Millersville pitching staff turned the game around, as the Bulldogs took an 11-8 lead. The Marauders were unable to respond in the top of the seventh and fell in game one.
GAME 2: 5-3 (VILLE)
Millersville once again jumped out to an early lead in game two of Wednesday's doubleheader. The Marauders maintained the advantage throughout the game and limited offensive pressure from the Bulldogs.
The Marauders got things started in the top of the first. Bryn O'Connor drew a walk before Pickett hit a two-run home run, her second of the day, to give Millersville a 2-0 lead.
Delaney Troxell started both games for the Marauders and completed all seven innings in game two. She held the Bulldogs to three hits and no runs through the first four innings.
Senior Ellie Soucy added to the run total with a solo home run, her first of the season. Vaughan later drove in O'Connor with a single to left field, extending the lead to 5-0.
Bowie State got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run to center field. They added their final run in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot. Troxell limited any further damage, securing the 5-3 win.
Offensively, Pickett and Vaughan led the way with two hits apiece and combined for three RBIs. Troxell finished with three strikeouts while allowing six hits, earning her 14th win of the season.
"We've been close the last few games, so it was good to see some timely quality at bats and hitting come together today." stated head coach Jen Probst.
The Marauders return to PSAC East play on Friday as they begin a home stretch, welcoming East Stroudsburg for a 1 p.m. start.
"A day like this is huge for us." said Probst. "It gives the group confidence and a chance to reset mentally as we head into an important stretch of PSAC East play."
