MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Millersville softball team was unable to contain Mount Olive's offense, falling in both games of the doubleheader by scores of 10-1 and 6-4.
GAME 1: 10-1 (5 Inn.) (MOUNT OLIVE)
Mount Olive jumped out in front in the opening half of game one. The Marauders were unable to get their offense going in the first two innings before Mount Olive put a run on the board in the bottom of the second. Starting pitcher Delaney Troxell gave up a single to begin the inning before drawing a sacrifice bunt that resulted in an out at first. In the next at-bat, an infield error put runners on first and third. An attempted stolen base by the runner on first led to a throwing error by the Marauders, allowing the runner from third to score the first run of the game.
The third inning proved to be a long one for the Marauder defense. The Trojans opened the inning with another single before that runner was thrown out by freshman Jaylee Lose while attempting to steal. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Trojans, who capitalized with back-to-back singles to make it 3-0. Troxell then walked the next batter to push the lead to four runs, forcing the Marauders to bring in Ava Nelson in relief. The Trojans continued their offensive push as Nelson allowed back-to-back hits to extend the lead to 6-0 before throwing a wild pitch two batters later that made it a seven-run game heading out of the third inning.
Lexi Pickett put Millersville on the board with a solo home run to left-center field, extending her hitting streak. The Marauders were unable to add any additional runs during the inning.
Mount Olive's momentum continued in the bottom of the fourth, opening with a double and a single to put runners on first and third. An attempted back pick at third resulted in a throwing error by Millersville, allowing the Trojans to score their eighth run. Shortly after, Mount Olive added another single to make it 9-1. Nelson recorded a groundout but later allowed another hit that extended the lead to nine runs. Rebecca Opperman entered late in the inning and recorded the final out for the Marauders.
The Marauders had no response in the fifth inning, going three up and three down. Millersville fell in five innings by a score of 10-1, with Pickett recording the team's only hit of the game.
GAME 2: 6-4 (MOUNT OLIVE)
Game two of the series mirrored the early stages of game one, with Mount Olive striking first on the scoreboard. Senior Nicolina Pezzone got the start in game two and struggled to gain momentum in the opening inning. The Trojans began with a single and a walk to put runners on first and second. The three-hole hitter then capitalized with a double and advanced to third on the throw, bringing in the first two runs of the game. Mount Olive followed that with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 3-0 after one inning.
The second inning went quickly for the Marauders, as Jiana Maniscalco was the only player to reach base following a single.
Mount Olive went right back to work in the bottom of the second, scoring early after a defensive error by the Marauders to start the inning. The runner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on the following at-bat with a double to left-center field, extending the lead to 4-0.
The third and fourth innings were quiet for both teams before the Trojans added their final two runs of the game in the fifth inning. Peyton Bechard entered in relief for Pezzone to begin the bottom of the fifth. She allowed a single in her first at-bat and then issued a walk to put two runners on. Bechard recorded a strikeout before giving up back-to-back singles that extended the lead to 5-0. The next batter reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Mount Olive to score its sixth run of the game.
Millersville finally got the offense going in the sixth inning as Pickett reached first base following an error. Makenna Balay entered as a pinch hitter and singled to center field to put two runners on, bringing up Cara Mazzucco. The sophomore connected on a pitch and sent it over the fence for her third home run of the season, cutting the deficit to three runs.
Bechard responded with a quick sixth inning defensively. Bryn O'Connor was the first to reach base in the seventh with a single. Cameron Witte entered as a pinch hitter and singled up the middle. Pickett then delivered a two-out single to score O'Connor from second. Millersville's momentum was cut short, however, as Mount Olive recorded the final out with two runners left on base, securing the sweep.
The final score of game two was 6-4 in favor of Mount Olive. Cecilia McBeth led the Marauders offensively with two hits.
"Today we had a bunch of mental and physical errors that we will look to learn from before conference play." Said head coach Jen Probst. "We made adjustments to their pitcher but ran out of innings to capitalize."
Millersville returns home on Wednesday to face IUP at Seaber Softball Stadium with a 2 p.m. start.
