GAME 1: 9-4 (VILLE)
The opening game on Wednesday saw plenty of action from both sides. The first inning was quiet before IUP got on the board in the second. An opening walk put a runner on first for the Crimson Hawks, and she advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball. The third batter of the inning drove a ball to the left side for a two-run home run, giving IUP a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
Millersville was unable to respond until the third inning, when Cecilia McBeth got the offense going with a single to center field. Lexi Pickett followed with a two-run blast to center field, marking her third home run in the past four games and tying the score at 2-2.
Delaney Troxell made quick work of the Crimson Hawks in the fourth inning, recording back-to-back groundouts and a strikeout to claim her 100th career strikeout as a Marauder. Troxell pitched a complete game, finishing with five strikeouts while allowing six hits and four runs.
The Marauders took the lead in the fourth inning as Jaylee Lose started the frame with a double to the right side. Jiana Maniscalco drove her in with a double to the left side to give Millersville a 3-2 lead after four innings.
IUP tied the game in the fifth following a single and a double that brought a run across the plate. However, the Marauders responded in the bottom of the inning.
Jocelyn Langer started the fifth with a single before the next three batters were hit by pitches. Carly Vaughan recorded an RBI with the bases loaded after being hit by a pitch and advancing to first base. Lose returned to the plate and broke the game open with a single that scored both McBeth and Pickett, giving Millersville a three-run lead. Cara Mazzucco followed with a double that scored Vaughan to extend the lead to 7-3. Allyson Black added another RBI with a single to center field, making it a five-run game heading into the sixth.
Troxell shut down the Crimson Hawks in the sixth before Millersville added its final run. Langer reached base on an opening walk, and McBeth followed with a double to the left side that scored Langer to make it a six-run game.
IUP managed to score once in the top of the seventh, but Troxell closed out the game to secure her fourth win of the season. Langer, McBeth, Lose, and Maniscalco led the offense with two hits apiece.
GAME 2: 9-0 (5 Inn.) (IUP)
Game two proved to be a complete reversal for the Marauders, as they were unable to score a run. Rebecca Opperman got the start and allowed a single to begin the game. A walk and another single later loaded the bases for IUP, and the Crimson Hawks capitalized on the opportunity by scoring one run in the opening inning.
The Marauders nearly responded in the bottom of the second as Lose and Maniscalco both reached base with hits. However, Millersville was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, leaving two runners on base.
The third inning proved to be a long one for the Marauders' defense. Back-to-back doubles brought another run home for IUP, prompting Millersville to make a pitching change and bring in Nicolina Pezzone. The senior began her outing with a walk, putting two runners on base, and IUP once again capitalized on the opportunity. A double over Mazzucco's head allowed two runs to score. Pezzone recorded the second out of the inning, but an infield error put two runners on once again. The next batter delivered a single that drove in two more runs, extending the Crimson Hawks' lead to 6–0 after three innings.
IUP continued its offensive push in the fourth inning, opening with back-to-back singles before hitting a three-run home run to left field to make it 9-0. Peyton Bechard entered the game in relief and was able to get Millersville out of the inning.
Millersville created another scoring opportunity in the fourth as Mazzucco, Maniscalco, and Hailey Watlington all reached base on singles. However, the Marauders were unable to come through, leaving three runners stranded.
Trailing by nine runs entering the fifth, the Marauders needed to score to extend the game. Langer, Vaughan, and Lose each reached base to give Millersville a chance to rally. After a lengthy at-bat, a pop-up to left field ended the game, securing a 9-0 victory for IUP and forcing the doubleheader split.
Maniscalco led the Marauders offensively with two hits, while Opperman was credited with the loss.
Millersville returns to action Friday when it hosts Lincoln for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
