WINSTOM-SALEM, N.C. - The Millersville softball team picked up a pair of wins over Winston-Salem. The Marauders took game one by a nine-run margin before securing a two-run victory in game two.
GAME 1: 10-1 (VILLE)
Millersville opened game one against Winston-Salem in dominant fashion. The opening inning went quietly for both sides before Millersville got things rolling in the second. Cara Mazzucco started the inning with a walk, and Carly Vaughan advanced her to second following a groundout. Mazzucco then stole third base before Cameron Witte knocked her in for the first run of the game with a single to center field.
Senior Nicolina Pezzone started game one for the Marauders and made quick work of Winston-Salem in the opening two innings. The offense helped her out even more in the top of the third inning by adding additional runs to the board.
Cecilia McBeth got things started with a single to begin the inning. She advanced to second on a wild pitch before Lexi Pickett followed with a single to the left side. Jaylee Lose was walked to load the bases for Jiana Maniscalco. Maniscalco singled, but McBeth was thrown out at home on the play. Mazzucco came up huge for the Marauders, hitting a grand slam to clear the bases and make it a five-run game. Vaughan continued the momentum with a double to center field, forcing Winston-Salem to make a pitching change. Witte followed with a single to put runners on first and third. Jocelyn Langer extended the run total to seven as she reached first on an error that allowed both Vaughan and Witte to score.
The Rams responded in the bottom of the third. After a pair of walks, Winston-Salem pieced together a single to score its first run of the game. Pezzone worked her way out of the inning, allowing only one run.
The fourth inning went quietly for both teams as Ava Nelson entered the game and retired the side in order.
Millersville picked the offense back up in the fifth inning, with Hailey Watlington starting things off with a single. Witte was then walked, bringing up Langer, who singled to load the bases. Pickett once again delivered for Millersville, hitting a double to score runners from second and third. Freshman Ava Bainbridge added an RBI after reaching first base on a fielder's choice to make it a 10-1 lead.
Peyton Bechard entered to finish the final inning for Millersville, retiring the side in order to secure the run-rule victory over Winston-Salem after five innings. Pickett, Maniscalco, and Witte led the offense with two hits apiece. Pezzone earned the win after tossing three innings with six strikeouts.
"Cam Witte and Lexi Pickett are locked in right now.'" Said head coach Jen Probst. "What's working for both of them is their ability to adjust to different pitchers/speeds."
GAME 2: 8-6 (VILLE)
The Marauders got the scoring started early. Langer opened the game with a single, extending her on-base streak to 54 straight games. Pickett brought Langer across the plate with a single, extending her hitting streak to five games. Lose followed with a single, and Mazzucco reached on a fielder's choice to place runners at first and second. However, the Marauders were unable to bring the additional runners home, leaving two on base.
Action picked back up in the third inning as McBeth led off the inning with a single. Pickett continued her hot hitting by blasting a two-run home run to make it a three-run game. Lose and Maniscalco both reached base with singles but were unable to score.
The offensive momentum continued into the fourth inning as Witte singled to begin the frame. Langer reached on a fielder's choice, and McBeth followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Pickett once again came through with an RBI single to make it 4-0. Watlington added an RBI of her own by bringing McBeth across the plate. The momentum did not stop there, as Mazzucco singled to center field to score two additional runs and extend the lead to 7-0.
Delaney Troxell got the start in game two and threw three shutout innings before Rebecca Opperman took over in the fourth, retiring the side in order.
The Marauders scored their final run in the fifth inning. Emilee Slotcavage reached base on a walk, stole second, and eventually made her way home following an error by the Rams' defense.
Millersville attempted to close the door in the fifth with Watlington in the circle. The Rams' offense came to life late, beginning with a single followed by a walk to put two runners on base. Winston-Salem capitalized with a single that scored both runners. Another single by the Rams brought in their fourth run of the game. Bechard entered in relief for Millersville and helped the defense escape the inning.
Winston-Salem stayed hot entering the bottom of the sixth, starting the inning with a home run followed by a single to center field. This forced Millersville to bring Troxell back into the game. The sophomore allowed two additional hits as the Rams scored their sixth run of the game.
Troxell was able to stop the Rams' momentum in the seventh inning and secure the Marauders' second win of the day. She finished with seven strikeouts across five innings of work. Pickett once again led the Marauders' offense with three hits and four RBIs.
"Delaney has the mental toughness to handle those moments. She also has her full arsenal of pitches working right now, making her tough to hit." said Probst.
Millersville will make its final stop in North Carolina at Mount Olive on Monday for a 12 p.m. doubleheader. The Marauders will then have a quick turnaround as they begin a six-game home stand on Wednesday starting with IUP.
