GAME 1: 9-8 (VIRGINIA ST.)
It was all Virginia State to start the opening game in Petersburg, Virginia. The Trojans recorded seven hits in the bottom of the first inning, putting four runs on the scoreboard. The Marauders were unable to respond in the second inning before Virginia State added to its scoring total. Starting pitcher Jordyn Skarren allowed two hits and a walk to begin the bottom of the second, which forced Millersville to make a pitching change. Rebecca Opperman came in relief for the Marauders but allowed two additional hits that resulted in three runs crossing the plate, making it a seven-run game after two innings.
The third inning went quiet as both squads failed to score. Millersville gained some momentum in the fourth following a single by Skarren, which was followed by Jaylee Lose hitting a triple down the right field line to score the Marauders' first run of the game. Jiana Maniscalco recorded an RBI in the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored pinch runner Ava Bainbridge from third. Lexi Pickett added the final hit of the inning after entering as a pinch hitter, closing out the two-run inning.
The fourth, fifth, and sixth innings were quiet for both teams. The Marauders made a last-chance effort in the seventh inning, which started with a double to right field by Pickett. Cameron Witte followed with a pinch-hit single to put runners on first and second. Jocelyn Langer returned to the diamond for the first time this season and extended her on-base streak to 51 games with a single to the left side, loading the bases. Cecilia McBeth hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score pinch runner Allyson Black from third. Three batters later, Skarren delivered with a single to the left side to score Witte. Lose continued the momentum as she reached first on an error by the shortstop that allowed Langer to score. Maniscalco then blew the game open with a triple that scored Carly Vaughan, Nicolina Pezzone, and Hailey Watlington to give Millersville a one-run lead.
Virginia State did not go down without a fight, as Pezzone entered the circle for the final inning. A walk and a bunt placed the Trojans at first and third. Virginia State hit a ball back to Pezzone that she caught, but a throwing error allowed the Trojans to score the tying run and move the game-winning run to third. The Trojans sealed the game with a single that scored the runner from third, giving Virginia State a 9-8 win.
"We allowed those first two innings to extend on some mentaL miscues that went in the books as hits." said head coach Jen Probst. "We had to change our approach in the box as the field we were playing at had a fence over 50 ft further than we normally play at. All our deep fly balls were being run down and caught. We worked late in the game to make solid contact and drive the ball with less lift."
GAME 2: 3-2 (VILLE)
The Marauders picked up their offensive presence to start game two as Jocelyn Langer singled up the middle to begin the game, extending her on-base streak to 52 games. Cecilia McBeth moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Lexi Pickett continued her strong offensive performance with a single to left field that scored Langer. Jaylee Lose followed with a single to left field before the inning came to a close.
Delaney Troxell earned the start in game two for the Marauders and made quick work of the Trojans, recording a one-two-three inning in the first. She followed that up with another scoreless inning in the second.
Virginia State found its rhythm in the third inning after reaching base on an error to begin the frame. The Trojans then recorded back-to-back hits to load the bases. Virginia State pushed a run across following another error by the Marauders. Troxell was able to work out of the inning, allowing only one run.
The game picked back up in the sixth inning as Carly Vaughan began the frame by reaching first on an error. Bryn O'Connor laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Vaughan to second base. Cameron Witte then put the Marauders ahead with a single to right-center field that scored Vaughan from second.
The Trojans responded in the bottom of the sixth inning, opening the frame with five consecutive hits to tie the game. Troxell limited the damage to just one run after a few fielder's choices and a ground ball helped end the inning.
Pickett sealed game two in the top of the seventh with a two-out blast to center field, giving Millersville a one-run lead. Troxell shut the Trojans down in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 3–2 victory for the Marauders.
"We allowed those first two innings to extend on some mental miscues that went in the books as hits." said head coach Jen Probst. "We had to change our approach in the box as the field we were playing at had a fence over 50 ft further than we normally play at. All our deep fly balls were being run down and caught. We worked late in the game to make solid contact and drive the ball with less lift. That approach rolled into the second game with a lot of competitive at bats. Lexi Pickett came up huge hitting one of the furthest home runs I've seen, getting it out of the park to secure the win."
Millersville returns to action Monday when it travels to North Carolina to take on Winston-Salem.
