MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville softball team snapped its losing streak with a split against Shippensburg. The Marauders suffered their fifth straight loss in PSAC East play in game one of today's doubleheader following a run-rule defeat. Millersville bounced back in game two with strong pitching and timely hitting to secure the win.
GAME 1: 1-10 (SHIP.)
The opening game of today's doubleheader was dominated by Shippensburg from start to finish. The Raiders outhit the Marauders 15-4 en route to a 10-1 run-rule victory.
Nicolina Pezzone once again got the start in game one, but the momentum was not in her favor. A pair of hits put two runners on to start the game before a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch brought in two runs, making it 2-0 in the top of the first inning.
Millersville responded in the bottom half with a solo home run by Cecilia McBeth, marking the first of her collegiate career.
The Raiders added another run in the following inning with a single up the middle to extend the lead. The third and fourth innings remained quiet before Shippensburg pulled away in the fifth. A single and an error put two runners on to start the inning before a double down the left field line drove in two runs. A walk once again put two runners on, and the Raiders capitalized with a three-run home run to make it 8-1.
A collection of hits in the top of the sixth pushed the Raiders' lead to 10-1 as Millersville struggled to respond offensively. The Marauders fell in game one, 10-1.
GAME 2: 6-1 (VILLE)
Delaney Troxell took the circle in game two and executed from start to finish. The sophomore threw a complete game with three strikeouts while allowing just one run. The Marauder offense provided support, scoring six runs as Troxell earned her 12th win of the season.
"Delaney's performance in the circle has a huge ripple effect on the entire team," said head coach Jen Probst. "When she's commanding the zone and keeping hitters off balance, it allows our lineup to play with a lot more confidence and freedom at the plate."
The opening two innings remained scoreless before Millersville struck first with two runs. Carly Vaughan reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Victoria Fuss followed with a walk. Bryn O'Connor advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, allowing Allyson Black to drive in a run with a single up the middle. Ava Bainbridge followed with a groundout to second base that scored Fuss.
Shippensburg responded in the third inning with a pair of hits that produced its only run of game two.
Millersville answered in the bottom half as Cara Mazzucco hit a solo home run to extend the lead. The Marauders added to their advantage in the fourth inning, which began with hits from Bainbridge and Cameron Witte. Mazzucco delivered again with a double down the left field line, driving in two more runs to make it 5-1 after four innings.
The fifth inning featured multiple walks issued by the Raiders. A hit and three consecutive walks allowed the Marauders to score their sixth and final run of the game.
Troxell closed out the game by allowing no hits over her final four innings, helping Millersville secure its sixth PSAC win of the season.
"Overall, today we had a lot more competitive at bats than the last few doubleheaders," Probst said. "We are still leaving too many runners on base, especially with less than two outs. Hoping the next two days of practice, we can get refocused and be ready to step up and execute in those situations."
Millersville moves to 6-6 in the PSAC East, placing fifth in the standings. The Marauders will host Kutztown on Friday, with the Golden Bears currently sitting third in the standings.
