Marauder softball drops both contests to Kutztown

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville softball dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader against Kutztown. The Marauders built an early lead in game one and held it until a late Golden Bears rally forced extra innings, where Kutztown secured the win, before controlling game two to complete the sweep.
GAME 1: 7-8 (8 Inn.) (KUTZ.)
The opening game of Friday's doubleheader appeared to be a Marauder win before a late rally in the top of the seventh inning cut into Millersville's chances. The Golden Bears tied the game on a passed ball before adding a run in the eighth to secure the victory.
The Marauders struck first in the bottom of the first inning, as birthday girl Lexi Pickett homered to left-center field to give Millersville a 2-0 lead after one inning.
The Golden Bears took the lead in the following inning, pushing four runs across the plate. A pair of hits to start the inning helped plate a run, and a two-run home run followed by a solo shot gave Kutztown a 5–2 lead after the top of the fourth.
Millersville responded in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run by Carly Vaughan.
The Marauders regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a grand slam to go ahead by two runs. Cecilia McBeth opened the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double by Jocelyn Langer. Pickett then drew an intentional walk to load the bases, setting up sophomore Cara Mazzucco, who reclaimed the lead with a grand slam to left field on the first pitch she saw.
The Golden Bears secured the win in the top of the eighth inning. A single opened the inning, and a sacrifice along with a flyout moved the runner to third before another single brought in the go-ahead run.
Millersville was unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning, falling to Kutztown, 8-7, in game one.
Delaney Troxell took the loss after throwing 7.2 innings and surpassing 100 pitches. Vaughan led the offense with two hits and one RBI.
GAME 2: 2-5 (KUTZ.)
Kutztown controlled the pace in game two, striking first and maintaining its lead despite a late push from the Marauders.
The Golden Bears took over in the third inning. A single drove in the first run, and two additional hits brought another run across the plate. Ava Nelson entered in relief of Nicolina Pezzone and limited any further damage.
Kutztown added to its lead in the following inning, as a pair of doubles produced two more runs to make it 4-0.
Millersville responded in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Carly Vaughan doubled to score Lexi Pickett, who had led off the inning with a double.
Both teams scored in the fifth inning. Kutztown added a run on a single, while Millersville answered in the bottom half with a solo home run by Allyson Black to make it 5-2.
Nelson held Kutztown scoreless in the top of the seventh, giving Millersville an opportunity with three runs needed to tie the game. Cam Witte opened the inning with a double, but a strikeout and two pop-ups ended the Marauders chances.
Millersville fell to Kutztown, 5-2, in game two. The Marauders hit the road Saturday, as they travel to Shepherd for a 1 PM DH.
