Pitt-Johnstown edges Millersville 6-4 in both games of doubleheader

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville University softball team finished its weekday doubleheaders with two 6-4 losses to Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday afternoon at Seaber Softball Stadium. Three Marauders hammered one home run each in the doubleheader.

The Marauders drop to 11-12 on the season while Pitt-Johnstown improve to 7-5.

Maggie Murphy was a major part of the offense, producing two hits in each game. Devan Masciulli played a key role at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the day. Allie Janowiak had a game one home run while Brianna Battavio and Hunter Little crushed one each in game two.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
• The first game went down to last inning to determine the winner. The Mountain Cats scored two runs in the top of the seventh and kept the Marauders scoreless in the bottom half of the inning.
• Pitt-Johnstown tied the game up at 4-4 in the top of the sixth beginning with a Bri Ginther triple and then shortly after a Ashley Shor single. Before Pitt-Johnstown's four run charge, Janowiak muscled a deep home run ball to left field, earning the first lead of the game for the Marauders at 4-2.
• Pitt-Johnstown struck first in the top of the third with an Olivia Porter two-run double. The Marauders responded with a run off a first basemen error, scoring Masciulli. In the Marauders' next at-bat, Hunter Little tied the game up for the first time with a RBI double in the bottom of the fourth.
• Murphy and Masciulli went 2-for-3 each. Janowiak led the team with two RBIs. The Marauders as a team totaled seven hits in game one.
• Emma Bevard got the start and pitched 5 2/3 innings while allowing nine hits, four runs and striking out one batter. Maddie Guinane came in with the game tied and gave up the game-winning run.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
• The Mountain Cats claimed control early in the second game with six unanswered runs. But the Marauders' bats woke up for a late inning charge including two home runs.
• Battavio ended the shutout with a bomb to center field, cutting the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 6-2. With the final chance to come back in the bottom of the seventh, Hunter Little smocked a line-drive two-run home run over the center field wall with one out. The Marauders were unable to muster more offense.
• Murphy led the bats in game two with a double and a single.
• Catherine Johnson threw in the first four innings, earning the loss. Johnson gave up seven hits and five runs while drawing four walks. Brianna White came in relief in the top of the fifth inning and threw the rest with one hit allowed. Johnson and White both struck out one batter each.

HEAD COACH JEN PROBST QUOTES
• "Today was streaky. We had moments of real greatness and others where we were flat."
• "Bri Battavio and Hunter Little's home runs put us in a position to have a chance to win the game. The great part about our offense is that I always know we are only one swing away from being right back in the game."
• "I also really liked Devan's effort today. She had a lot of quality at-bats today."
• "Bri White hammered the zone today and mixed her pitches well."

NOTES
• Masciulli hit her first career triple. Masciulli has the team's longest hit streak at four games.
• Game two's runs came all from Battavio and Little's home runs.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders go head-to-head against Mansfield in their third straight home doubleheader on Saturday, March 23. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
