MANSFIELD, Pa. - Millersville softball wrapped up its weekend at Mansfield, but offensive struggles continued as the Marauders dropped both games on Saturday. The losses marked the Mountaineers' first two PSAC East victories of the season.
GAME 1: 1-2 (MANSFIELD)
A late rally in the final inning of game one was not enough for the Marauders, as they fell 2-1 to the Mountaineers of Mansfield in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Sophomore Delaney Troxell started in the circle for Millersville and limited Mansfield to one hit through the first two innings. A solo home run in the bottom of the third inning gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.
Mansfield added another run in the fourth inning with back-to-back hits to extend its advantage to 2-0.
Millersville did not respond until the top of the seventh inning, when Cara Mazzucco led off with a solo home run to cut the deficit to one. Victoria Fuss followed with a single to spark a rally, and Carly Vaughan advanced Fuss to second with a sacrifice bunt to put her in scoring position. Cameron Witte added a pinch-hit single to put runners on the corners. However, the rally came to an abrupt end as back-to-back strikeouts ended the Marauders' chances with two runners in scoring position.
GAME 2: 4-8 (MANSFIELD)
The Mountaineers carried their offensive momentum into game two, outhitting the Marauders 11-6. An early lead by Mansfield allowed it to control the tempo of the game, as it maintained command from the second inning through the final out.
Three hits in the bottom of the second inning produced the first two runs for the Mountaineers, giving them an early advantage.
Allyson Black responded in the top of the third inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to one run heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Rebecca Opperman entered in relief of Nicolina Pezzone in the third inning and limited further damage. She maintained control until the bottom of the fourth, when a pair of hits produced another run for Mansfield, prompting Ava Nelson to enter in relief. A groundout to third base brought in an additional run, and a two-run home run extended the lead to 6-1 heading into the fifth inning.
Mansfield added to its lead in the fifth inning with three hits that resulted in two more runs, making the score 8-1.
Millersville attempted to respond in the top of the seventh inning. Jiana Maniscalco led off with a walk, and senior Hailey Watlington drove her in with a double to left-center field. Cameron Witte followed with an RBI double of her own to make it 8-3. Cecilia McBeth added a sacrifice fly to left field to score another run and cut the deficit to 8-4. However, the rally ended with a strikeout, securing the win for Mansfield and handing Millersville its second loss of the day.
The Marauders move to 7-13 in the PSAC East and will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Maryland to face Bowie State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
