LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Millersville softball dropped both contests on Friday to Lock Haven. The Marauders struggled to generate offensive momentum and were unable to match the Bald Eagles' production at the plate.
GAME 1: 1-2 (LOCK HAVEN)
A pitching battle proved to be the deciding factor in the opening game. A game-tying home run in the fourth inning was not enough for the Marauders, as the Bald Eagles responded in the bottom half with a run to regain the lead. Millersville was unable to answer against Lock Haven's pitching and fell 2-1.
Lock Haven scored first in the bottom of the second inning. A pair of singles put two runners on to begin the frame. Delaney Troxell worked through the early trouble before surrendering a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing the first run to score.
Millersville responded in the top of the fourth inning when Lexi Pickett hit a solo home run making it her 12th of the season and to tie the game.
The Bald Eagles quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning. An error to start the inning put a runner on base, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a single up the middle to give Lock Haven a 2-1 lead.
The Marauders struggled to produce any offensive momentum for the remainder of the game and dropped the opener, 2-1.
GAME 2: 0-2 (LOCK HAVEN)
A two-hit performance by the Marauders limited their opportunities to score, as Lock Haven plated two late runs to secure the sweep.
Millersville had an opportunity to strike first in the top of the third inning. Ava Bainbridge led off with a single and stole second base. Jocelyn Langer followed with a single up the middle, putting runners on the corners. Bryn O'Connor then drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases, but the Marauders were unable to capitalize as a groundout ended the inning.
Senior Nicolina Pezzone earned the start in game two and delivered a strong opening, limiting Lock Haven to two hits through the first three innings.
Lock Haven broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning. A hit-by-pitch started the inning, followed by a double that placed two runners in scoring position. After a walk loaded the bases, an infield error allowed the first run to score.
Ava Nelson entered in relief in the fifth inning and helped limit further damage. However, a double in the sixth inning, followed by a single, brought home the second and final run of the game.
Millersville was unable to respond offensively and fell 2-0.
Head coach Jen Probst stated, "Offensively, we needed more disciplined, quality at-bats. We had chances to add runs on the board but didn't take our swings. When we stay within our approach, we do a much better job of giving our pitchers that extra cushion."
Millersville remains in eighth place in the East and will travel to Mansfield for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
