BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Millersville softball dropped both games to Bloomsburg in Monday's makeup doubleheader. The Huskies run-ruled the Marauders in game one, then used a late comeback to take game two and complete the sweep.
GAME 1: 0-8 (BLOOMSBURG)
The opening game was one to forget for Millersville, as it was run-ruled in five innings by Bloomsburg. The Marauders were outhit 7-1 in the 8-0 loss.
Nicolina Pezzone got the start in game one and pitched four innings for the Marauders. She recorded two strikeouts while allowing eight runs, five of which were earned.
Bloomsburg scored its first two runs in the opening inning off a pair of hits. The Huskies extended their lead to four in the second inning with a sacrifice fly and a single. A home run in the third made it 5-0, and three additional runs in the fourth pushed the lead to eight.
Millersville was unable to respond in the fifth, going three up, three down as it fell by run rule in game one.
GAME 2: 6-10 (BLOOMSBURG)
Millersville flipped the script in game two, jumping out to an early lead. However, a seven-run inning by Bloomsburg in the fourth put the Huskies ahead entering the fifth. Millersville responded in the top half of the inning, but it was not enough, as Bloomsburg added insurance runs to put the game out of reach.
Lexi Pickett got the Marauders on the board with a solo home run to right field. Millersville threatened again in the second inning, as Cara Mazzucco, Carly Vaughan, and Delaney Troxell loaded the bases, but a lineout double play ended the scoring opportunity.
The Marauders added four runs in the fourth inning. Mazzucco opened the inning with a single and later scored on a double by Bryn O'Connor. Cecilia McBeth followed with a triple that scored O'Conner and Jocelyn Langer, prompting a Bloomsburg pitching change. Pickett then drove in McBeth with a single to give Millersville a 5-0 lead.
Bloomsburg responded in the bottom half of the inning, taking the lead with a seven-run frame on seven hits. After loading the bases with three consecutive hits, the Huskies hit a grand slam to cut the deficit to one. Another series of hits set up a three-run home run, giving Bloomsburg a 7-5 advantage.
The Marauders answered in the fifth inning with a solo home run by Jiana Maniscalco. However, Bloomsburg extended its lead in the bottom half, scoring on a single that prompted Millersville to bring in Ava Nelson in relief. Nelson allowed back-to-back hits, as the Huskies pushed the lead to 10-6.
Millersville was unable to mount a comeback and fell 10-6 in game two. The Marauders move to 5-5 in PSAC play and will return home Tuesday for a doubleheader against Shippensburg.
