WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Marauders softball team earned a sweep over West Chester, using a dominant pitching performance to secure a shutout in game one before battling to a gritty extra-innings victory in game two.
GAME 1: 3-0 (VILLE)
Delaney Troxell delivered a standout performance in game one for Millersville, earning a 3-0 shutout victory and recording her fifth complete game of the season. The offense tallied six hits and produced three runs, providing Troxell with the support she needed in the circle.
Action began in the second inning when Carly Vaughan recorded her eighth hit-by-pitch of the season. Vaughan advanced to second on a groundout and moved to third following an error by the shortstop, which also allowed Cara Mazzucco to reach base. Allyson Black drove in the first run on a fielder's choice to second base.
Millersville added another run later in the inning after Vaughan, Mazzucco, and Jiana Maniscalco loaded the bases with singles. Jocelyn Langer put the ball in play, and an error by the West Chester pitcher allowed the second run to score.
The Marauders added their final run in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Lexi Pickett. Troxell closed out the game over the final three innings, allowing six total hits and recording two strikeouts en route to her 10th win of the season.
GAME 2: 9-7 (VILLE)
The second game of the day was a nail-biter, as the Marauders secured a 9-7 extra-innings victory in a back-and-forth contest. Millersville tied the game in the sixth inning to force extras and held strong defensively before a pair of hits in the ninth inning proved to be the difference.
Millersville struck first when Langer reached on a walk and later scored on a hit by Jaylee Lose, giving the Marauders a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
Senior Nicolina Pezzone returned to action and got the start in the circle. She allowed no hits through the first two innings before West Chester tied the game in the third with a solo home run.
The Marauders responded in the fourth inning when Pickett hit a solo home run, her second of the day, to regain the lead. However, West Chester answered in the bottom half of the inning with a home run of its own to even the score at 2-2.
Millersville regained the lead in the fifth inning after Mazzucco and Victoria Fuss reached base. Emilee Slotcavage advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Langer followed with a sacrifice fly to score Mazzucco from third.
West Chester responded in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with a pair of hits and a walk. Troxell entered in relief and worked to limit the damage, but the Golden Rams capitalized with a hit-by-pitch to tie the game before adding a double to take a 5-3 lead.
Millersville answered in the sixth inning by loading the bases. Mazzucco delivered a key double down the left field line, driving in two runs to tie the game.
In the ninth inning, Mazzucco reached base again with a hit and was joined by Bryn O'Connor, who advanced her to third with a single. Cecilia McBeth broke the tie with a line drive to left field, scoring the go-ahead run. Pickett followed with her third home run of the day, a three-run shot that extended the Marauders' lead.
"This team has no quit." said head coach Jen Probst. "They don't panic and we focus on competing and controlling what we can control. They found a way to have quality at bats and continue to put pressure on them all game until we got the win."
Troxell remained steady in the circle, allowing a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning as West Chester narrowed the deficit, but she closed out the game to secure her second win of the day.
"Delaney was in that same spot, extra innings and bases loaded last year and it didn't go our way" said Probst. "She fed off that experience, stepped up and got the job done. Proud of her and our defense, especially getting a shutout against a strong lineup."
Offensively, Pickett, Lose, and Mazzucco each recorded two hits, combining for seven RBIs.
Millersville returns to action Friday with a doubleheader at East Stroudsburg, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
