MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville softball team came out on top in both contests against the Mansfield Mountaineers. A defensive battle won Millersville game one before a late rally in game gave Millersville the overall sweep on the day.
GAME 1: 3-2 (VILLE)
The Marauders claimed game one of the series with a strong defensive performance. Mansfield out-hit Millersville, 9–5, but a strong outing by Delaney Troxell propelled the Marauders to the win.
Action began in the bottom of the first inning as Cecilia McBeth and Lexi Pickett reached base on a fielder's choice and a double. Jaylee Lose carried her offensive momentum over from the previous game, connecting on a double that scored both runners and gave Millersville a 2–0 lead after one inning.
Mansfield responded in the top of the third inning with two doubles to score its first run of the game. The Mountaineers tied the game shortly after, as a single brought the tying run home from third.
Lose once again delivered for the Marauder offense, hitting a solo home run to center field to give Millersville a one-run lead in the third inning and making it her first at the collegiate level.
"Jaylee's production has not only helped us in clutch moments today, but it's also creating opportunities for the hitters around her." said head coach Jen Probst.
The final four innings turned into a defensive battle for both teams. Millersville ultimately held on for the win, as Troxell recorded three strikeouts in the final inning. She finished with a complete game and seven total strikeouts. Offensively, Lose and Pickett led the way with two hits apiece as the Marauders secured a 3–2 victory.
GAME 2: 6-5 (VILLE)
The Marauders trailed for much of game two against Mansfield before rallying late to complete the sweep. A three-run home run in the fifth inning sparked the comeback, and a Mansfield defensive error in the sixth ultimately gave Millersville the lead for good.
Mansfield jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, using a bases-loaded single to drive in two runs. A fielder's choice brought home a third run before starter Ava Nelson worked out of the inning.
The Mountaineers added another run later in the game after a pair of hits produced a run off relief pitcher Rebecca Opperman.
Millersville responded in the bottom of the third inning when Jocelyn Langer and McBeth each recorded hits to reach base. A single by Pickett drove in Langer for the Marauders' first run of the game.
Mansfield extended its lead to 5–1 in the fourth inning after a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly brought another run home.
The Marauders surged in the fifth inning to tie the game. Langer opened the inning with a single and later scored on a double by McBeth. Pickett followed with a single to put two runners on base. Lose delivered once again, blasting the first pitch she saw over center field for a three-run home run that evened the score.
"That confidence comes from knowing we can string quality at-bats together at any point." said Probst.
Millersville took the lead in the sixth inning following a Mansfield error. Langer reached base with a double to left-center field. With two outs, Pickett lifted a pop fly that was dropped by the shortstop, allowing Langer to score the go-ahead run.
Troxell entered in the fifth inning and earned her second win of the day, tossing three shutout innings in relief. She induced three pop flies in the sixth inning to maintain the lead. Offensively, Langer and Vaughan led the way with three hits apiece as the Marauders secured the 6–5 victory.
Millersville returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to West Chester for its first PSAC road contest.
