Millersville dominates Chestnut Hill with offensive firepower

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville swept Chestnut Hill in its final contest before the PSAC opener. The Marauders' offense shined in both games, earning run-rule victories in each.
GAME 1: 12-4 (VILLE)
The opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader saw action begin in the bottom of the second inning. Starting pitcher Delaney Troxell made quick work of her first two innings, allowing no runs.
Jiana Maniscalco was the first aboard with a single to left field. Carly Vaughan joined her after a Griffins defensive error. Senior Allyson Black then drove a ball to right-center field for a three-run home run.
Chestnut Hill responded in the third inning after a double and an error put two runners on base. A single to right field scored the first run, and a home run in the following at-bat gave the Griffins a 4-3 lead.
The Marauders regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Maniscalco, Vaughan, and Black loaded the bases to start the inning. Cameron Witte capitalized with a double down the right-field line, scoring two runs and giving Millersville a 5-4 lead.
Jocelyn Langer reached base on a bunt to load the bases again. Cecilia McBeth followed with a double to right-center field, driving in two more runs. Lexi Pickett added a two-RBI single in the next at-bat to make it 9-4. Cara Mazzucco capped the inning with an RBI single to left field, extending the lead to 10-4.
Chestnut Hill was unable to respond in the top of the fifth as Peyton Bechard entered in relief for Troxell.
Millersville secured the run-rule victory in the bottom of the fifth. Vaughan led off with a solo home run, and Black and Witte followed with back-to-back singles. Langer delivered a two-RBI single to right field, sealing the 12-4 win.
Troxell earned her sixth win of the season with four strikeouts. Witte led the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Maniscalco, Black, and Langer each recorded two hits.
"The key is consistency and staying disciplined in our approach regardless of our opponent." stated head coach Jen Probst. "We want to build off today by continuing to have quality at-bats."
GAME 2: 8-0 (VILLE)
Rebecca Opperman got the start in game two and threw a shutout to earn her first collegiate victory.
Opperman limited the Griffins to one hit through the first three innings. Emilee Slotcavage opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left field, her second of the season.
Millersville added to its lead in the fourth inning. Black led off with a home run, her second of the day. Bryn O'Connor reached on a walk and quickly advanced to second on a stolen base. Slotcavage delivered again with a double to left-center field, scoring O'Connor. Langer followed with an RBI single to left field, making it 4-0 after four innings.
Opperman continued her strong performance in the fifth inning, striking out three batters.
The Marauders closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth. Pickett and Vaughan reached base to start the inning. Maniscalco singled, allowing Pickett to score on a throwing error by the Griffins' outfielder. Vaughan scored shortly after on a passed ball.
Black reached base and advanced to second on a steal, forcing a throwing error that allowed Maniscalco to score. O'Connor drew a walk, and Ava Bainbridge singled to load the bases. Slotcavage earned a walk to drive in the final run, giving Millersville an 8–0 run-rule victory.
Opperman finished with six strikeouts in the shutout. Langer led the offense with three hits and one RBI, while Black and Slotcavage each recorded two hits.
"Our production today really speaks to the depth we have in our offense." said Probst. "We're not relying on just one or two players to produce -- anyone can step up in a big moment. That's credited to the work they are putting in as well as supporting one another."
Millersville returns to action Friday as they host Lock Haven for their PSAC opener at 2 p.m.
