Marauders outscore Chestnut Hill 28-0 in doubleheader sweep

PHILADEPHIA, Pa. – Millersville came into Monday's doubleheader against Chestnut Hill following a pair of five-inning wins over Holy Family the week before -- the Marauders, along with a combined no-hitter in game one, outscored the Griffins 28-0 in two five-inning victories to extend their winning streak to five.

The Marauders won the first game 17-0 and recorded a combined no-hitter before taking care of business in game two with an 11-0 victory. Millersville improves to 5-1 on the season with its only blemish coming against Goldey-Beacom in the season-opener. Chestnut Hill falls to 0-4 on the short season.

'Ville had a number of strong offensive performances that were highlighted by Allyson Black, Gabi Turner and Gabby D'Ottavio. Black finished 4-6 with six RBI's and a solo shot in game two. D'Ottavio went a perfect 5-5 at the plate and drove in three RBI's, and Turner went 4-6 with seven RBI's and two home runs.

GAME ONE
  • Alex Schaefer threw three innings and struck out four batters, while Kendra Bumgardner threw two innings and recorded three strikeouts. Neither pitcher allowed a hit as Schaefer earned her third win of the season to remain unbeaten (3-0).
  • The Marauders started strong with four first-inning runs courtesy of a Turner, bases-clearing single that scored three runners after an errant throw from Lock Haven's centerfielder. Turner followed the hit by stealing home on a wild pitch that put 'Ville up 4-0.
  • Millersville then had its biggest inning of the day, scoring 13 total runs in the second off of nine hits and a pair of Griffin errors. Millersville started the inning with four-consecutive doubles before Turner hit a two-run blast to left field that put Millersville up 11.
  • The Marauders finished the inning with six addition runs to cap off the 17-run win.
GAME TWO
  • Morgan Crutcher continued her strong play in game two, throwing five innings, two strikeouts and only allowing five hits. She moved to 2-1 on the season with the win.
  • Millersville's offense was more spread out in game two, with runs coming in the first, third and fourth innings. D'Ottavio opened the scoring with a single to left field in the first that drove in Bumgardner. Allyson Black then snuck a ball past the first baseman to reach second and drive in three additional Marauder runs, putting 'Ville up 4-0 following the first.
  • The Marauders would go on to scored five runs in the third inning that was capped off by a two-RBI single to left field from Fuss that extended the lead to nine.
  • Turner and Black ended the big day with back-to-back homeruns in the fourth inning.
POSTGAME THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH JEN PROBST
  • "All around great team wins today. Pitchers did well in tough weather conditions. I was really happy with how we started game two, it was our focus to come out in the second game like it was the first inning of the day."
UP NEXT
The Marauders will enjoy a 48-hour break before hosting Jefferson on Wednesday, March 1 with doubleheader action starting at 2 p.m. on the 'Ville Sports Network.
