Smith breaks record as softball splits

Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania - Millersville dominated the Griffins 9-0 in the first half of a twinbill before falling 7-5 to Chestnut Hill in the second game. Brittany Smith hit her Millersville record-breaking 15th career homer in the game one victory and Cassidy Pinchorski pitched all five innings for the Marauders.
In the first inning, Rebecca Blatt led off with a double and Kaelyn Buskey advanced her to third. Heather Lutz hit a sacrifice to bring Blatt home and put Millersville ahead, 1-0. After Millersville scored another run in the second, the Marauders looked to blow it open in the third. Lutz would lead off with a double and Brittany Smith smashed a two-run homer to make the score 4-0. A few batters later, Morgan Almodovar would double home Megan McCurdy and Millersville was in control 5-0. Smith's homer was the 15th of her career which is a Millersville softball record.
After Lutz and Smith reached base in the fifth, McCurdy went yard and Millersville jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead. The Marauders would tack on a run in the fifth as Cassidy Pinchorski threw all five innings and earned the shutout victory.
In game two, it was the Griffins who established control early, scoring six runs in the first four innings to hold a 6-0 lead. Kaelyn Buskey led off the fifth with a solo home run to get the Marauders on the board. Jamie Trewhella singled and Morgan Almodovar doubled to set up a Raeann Buskey sacrifice fly and bring Millersville to within four runs.
The homers kept coming for Millersville in the sixth as Kaelyn Buskey crushed another shot to pull Millersville to within just one run at 6-5. The next three batters would go down in order as the sides moved to the bottom half of the inning.
The first two batters would be retired for Chestnut Hill but the Griffins would mount a two-out rally to make the score 7-5. In the top of the seventh, Raeann Buskey singled but the next three Marauders went down in order as Millersville fell 7-5.
The Marauders now sit at 9-10 but return home Saturday for a doubleheader with Clarion beginning at 11 a.m.
