Military Appreciation Day
The Millersville softball team is hosting its annual Military Appreciation Day on Saturday during the twinbill against Lock Haven. The girls will be wearing camouflage ribbons in their hair and sophomore left fielder Heather Lutz's grandfather, Dave Lutz (Air Force), will be throwing out a ceremonial first pitch.
Chicks Dig the Long Ball
Last season, the Marauders hit 10 total home runs in 48 games. Through 23 games in the 2015 campaign, Millersville has already matched that total and Brittany Smith (talked more about later) is the ringleader in that category with four roundtrippers of her own. After her, Jordan Sheffield and Maria Spinosa each have two while Danielle DiFilippo and freshman Kelsey Campbell have hit one home run apiece. The team's 10 four-baggers are tied for fifth in the PSAC.
Sophomore Sensation
Not only does Brittany Smith lead the team in home runs with four, that total is ranked in a tie for third in the conference and the sophomore has been on a tear lately. After starting PSAC East play just 3-for-13 (.231), Smith is six of her last 13 (.462) with five runs scored, six RBIs, one double, and a couple home runs. The Wyomissing, Pa., native was hitting a red-hot .310 through the first nine games of the season before she hit a bit of a slump and was just 6-for-31 (.194) in the next 10 games before the recent four-game stretch.
Shaking Up the Lineup
In 2014 as a freshman, Maria Spinosa started above the number five spot in the lineup just once and she was 0-for-1 that game (cleanup spot). Prior to this season, Spinosa had started in every hole in the lineup from four through nine, but never higher. This season, she has made at least one start in spots five through nine but the last four games have seen a bit of a shakeup in the starting nine. In that four-game stretch, Spinosa has moved up to the two hole and so far, it has been a revelation. The Marauders are 3-1 with Spinosa starting in the two hole and she has hit in five of her 13 at-bats (.385). Prior to the last four games, she was hitting just .231 and her average dipped as low as .100 on March 6.
Scouting the Bald Eagles
As a team, Lock Haven is hitting better than the Huskies but not by much with a clip of .253. Rachel Mouillesseaux (.364), Sarah Schwalm (.360) and Michelle Holweger lead the team in batting average. The Bald Eagles have also had some pretty good pitching so far this spring with a team ERA of 2.82 and just two pitchers with innings under their belt. Not only can Mouillesseaux hit but she can pitch and has a 2.88 ERA while Jessie Probst leads the team in that category and has accumulated an ERA of 2.76. Both of them have pitched nearly the same amount of innings as Mouillesseaux has accounted for 56 innings and Probst has thrown 50 and two-thirds.
Scouting the Huskies
Bloomsburg is coming off a split with West Chester on Thursday in which the Huskies took game one 7-0 and dropped the second contest of the doubleheader, 5-0. As a team, Bloomsburg is hitting just .245 but senior Kayla McHale has been no slouch at the plate. The 5-7 outfielder is the only Husky hitting above .300 at .418 (23-of-55) with 11 runs, five doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 11 RBIs. In the circle, Bloomsburg has one of the best pitching staffs in all of the PSAC. As a team, the Huskies are the only team in the league with an ERA below two at 1.68. Mallory Tomaschik (1.42 ERA), Taylor Parker (1.50 ERA) and former Marauder Sarah Bertoni (1.98 ERA) are the three pitchers Bloomsburg has used so far this season.
