Salem, Va. – On the final day of competition at the Salem Tournament the weather was cold, rainy, and dreary, but the Millersville softball team was just heating up. The Marauders totaled 12 hits and eight runs in four innings to defeat Ohio Valley 8-0 on Sunday morning.
The win improved Millersville's tournament record to 5-1 and its season record to 10-2. With the victory Coach Kathy Cummings has directed the team to 10 wins in its last 11 contests. She is the only coach in program history to lead the softball team to 10 wins in 11 games. The 1994 squad was the only other team to record the same stretch of success when they won 11 of 12 games to start the season.
Sophomore pitcher Sarah Bertoni pitched the entire game for Millersville and only surrendered four hits and one walk as she improved her record to 4-1 on the season. Third baseman Jamie Motsko accounted for half of the team's runs as she tallied three RBI's and scored a run for the Black and Gold.
Despite the early start time of the game, the Marauder bats were alive in the first inning. After two quick outs, Gabbie Berry doubled to right field. Four consecutive singles by Jaime Motsko, Cara Nance, Ashley Cantiello, and Taylor Odell-Smith plated three runs for Millersville in the bottom of the first.
Motsko batted in her second run in as many plate appearances in the second inning. After Berry knocked in another run for the Marauders, Motsko singled to left field to score Ginely Ortiz-Marrero from third to pad the lead to 5-0 after two innings of play.
In the bottom of the fourth Millersville stretched the lead even further. Ortiz-Marrero led the inning off with a bunt single. A single by DiFillipo forced a throw to third but Ortiz-Marrero made it in safely and DiFilippo moved to second. Next, Berry stepped up to the plate and executed the sacrifice squeeze perfectly. Ortiz-Marrero slide into home safely as the lead increased to six. Motsko and Nance both grounded out, but in each case the runners were able to advance home to increase the lead to 8-0.
Bertoni ended the game with a one-two-three fifth inning as the eight run mercy rule came into effect to conclude the contest. The Nanticoke native improved her ERA to 0.84 in 25 innings of action this year.
Millersville has now combined for 24 hits over the past two games. This is the most over a two game stretch for the team this season.
The Marauders next game is on Tuesday, March 19. They travel to Coker to take on the Cobras at 2 p.m.
