Marauders Sweep Griffins Behind Back-to-Back Shutouts from Bertoni, Andraos

Millersville, Pa. – While the weather was busy trying to decide what it wanted to do Wednesday afternoon at the Millersville Softball Field, the Marauders wasted no time figuring what they wanted to do with visiting Chestnut Hill, topping the Griffins 1-0 and 8-0, respectively, to open the season with a 5-1 start. It is the team's best start since a 6-0 record six games through the 2008 schedule.
Sophomore pitcher Sarah Bertoni fired a five-hit, complete game shutout in the first game, dueling all game long with Griffin starter Courtney Dayter. Bertoni came out on top, moving her record to 2-0 when sophomore second baseman Danielle DiFilippo put a charge into one in the sixth inning with the score tied at 0-0. While the home team managed just five hits off Dayter, DiFilippo made sure the final one counted.
After five and a half scoreless innings between both teams, the Marauders broke through on one of DiFilippo's two hits. With sophomore catcher Gabbie Berry standing on second after being plunked to lead off the inning, DiFilippo socked a Dayter offering to the fence in left center. The Hatboro native's gapper was enough to allow Berry to come around third base for the winning run.
After surrendering three hits in her first two trips to the circle, Bertoni settled in, allowing just two fifth-inning singles the rest of the way. In total, the Greater Nanticoke High School product allowed five hits and struck out seven in seven scoreless innings, lowering her ERA to just 0.58 on the season. It was the fourth shutout of Bertoni's career, and the 19th time in her first two seasons that she has gone the distance in a game.
In the second game, freshman pitcher Brianna Andraos got the call in the circle and was even better than she was in her first career start, a six-hit shutout of Bowie State last week. Andraos spun another shutout, going the distance of six innings while striking out seven and yielding just two hits, which runs her scoreless innings streak for the season to 11.0.
Even though Andraos would not have needed more than a run in the back end of the doubleheader, Millersville's offense got to Chestnut Hill pitcher Mandi Rush early and often, scoring at least one run in each of the six innings. Cara Nance, who had two hits in game one, went a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish in the second game, while Ashley Cantiello delivered two RBI to lead the team in that category.
In an offensive outburst that saw the team score eight runs on 10 hits, seven of the 10 Marauders that stepped to the plate registered a hit. That balanced offense got to Chestnut Hill starter Mandi Rush, who entered the game with just a 1.71 ERA over her first three starts of the year.
The Marauders now hit the road for nine consecutive games over their spring break trip. The next six games are in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament over the weekend. That slate sees the team play six games in a span of three days, kicked off by a date with Bluefield State Friday at 5 p.m. Later that day, Millersville meets Shepherd in a 7 p.m. tilt.
