Clermont, FL – Friday saw the Marauder softball team play its first two games of its spring tournament at the National Training Complex in Clermont, Fla. Playing in a different state couldn't put a halt to Millersville's skid, which now stands at five in a row.
The team dropped both games, 3-0 and 4-1 respectively, in a morning doubleheader with Urbana (Ohio) to fall to 1-5 on the season. While the pitching held up, the bats could not get in a groove, and it spelled doom for the Marauders.
In game one, Alicia Hughes allowed three earned runs over 4.2 innings, falling to 0-2 on the season. Millersville could only muster one hit, a double coming off the bat of Gabbie Berry in the top of the fifth inning. The Marauders looked to have a rally going in that inning, as Hughes walked in the next at bat. However, with Alexandra Hoops batting, Hughes was picked off first, snuffing out the threat.
The Blue Knights' Lauren Anderson suffocated the Marauders' attack, pitching a complete game and striking out five. Alyssa Maag led the way on offense for Urbana, with a two-run home run in the fourth.
The second game produced similar results, with a strong pitching performance by Sarah Bertoni who allowed four runs, but only two earned while striking out eight in a complete game. For Urbana, it was Haley Kolmerton's turn to shut down the Marauder bats. She allowed only one run on three hits.
Ally Homa, Danielle DiFilippo and Ashley Cantiello collected Millersville's only hits. The Marauders again had a rally going when Cantiello doubled to deep left with Millersville trailing 2-0. Erika Bowman scored four pitches later on a wild pitch, putting a Marauder run on the board. That was all Millersville would get, however, and Urbana scored two in the top of the seventh to close out the Marauders.
Millersville is back at it again tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., when the team takes on Mercy College. The second game of Saturday's action has the Marauders playing UMass Lowell at 12:30 p.m.
