MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville University women's tennis team came up just short in a tightly contested conference opener, falling 4–3 to the Golden Rams of West Chester. Lauren Hayes and Marian Hayes secured the team's lone doubles victory, while M. Hayes, Mia Gassert, and Annika Rojas each delivered strong performances in singles play to earn individual wins.
Lauren Hayes and Marian Hayes dominated their doubles match with a decisive 6–1 victory. However, the Marauders' other two pairings—Annika Rojas and Mia Gassert, along with Duda Coutinho Barreto and Hailey Guerrero—each fell to the Golden Rams by identical 6–2 scores.
M. Hayes remained perfect in singles play, improving to 4–0 with a commanding 6–2, 6–1 victory. L. Hayes narrowly missed out on a win in a hard-fought match, dropping a tight first set 7–6(6), bouncing back with a dominant 6–1 second set, but ultimately falling 6–2 in the third set. Rojas also battled to three sets, rebounding from a 6–2 first-set loss with a 6–2 response and carrying that momentum into a 6–2 win in the final set. Gassert secured her victory in straight sets, taking the first 6–4 before cruising to a 6–0 finish. Barreto and Callie Culbertson faced tough outings and were unable to gain momentum in their respective matches.
"We were shorthanded today, but that's no excuse," said head coach Matt Helsel. "Congrats to West Chester. They played very well and deserved the win. I'm happy with our effort, and who knows, maybe we'll see them again."
The Marauders are back in action March 28-29 as they travel with the men's team to face the Fighting Scots from Edinboro University (Saturday) and the Wildcats from Daemen University (Sunday).
