SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - In what the Marauders believed would be their final match of the season, the Millersville University women's tennis team delivered a dominant 5-2 victory over Shippensburg University, securing the fourth and final spot in the PSAC Tournament. Millersville swept the doubles point, while Lauren Hayes, Marian Hayes, Annika Rojas, and Duda Coutinho Barreto powered through singles play to seal the win.
The Hayes sisters dominated their doubles match with a commanding 6-0 victory, while Rojas and Mia Gassert followed with a quick 6-1 win. Luci Consigliere and Barreto faced the toughest challenge of the trio, but battled through for a 7-5 victory to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles play, L. Hayes set the tone early with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win to secure the Marauders' second point. Barreto followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory, pushing Millersville ahead 3-0. Rojas then clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 decision, earning the decisive fourth point. M Hayes added the final point for the Marauders with a strong 6-1, 6-2 performance. Gassert battled in her first set, narrowly falling 7-6(4), before dropping the second set 6-0. Consigliere faced a tough match-up, being forced into a third set but ultimately falling in a tight 11-9 decision.
"With half of our starting line up being freshmen and changing our doubles pairing late into the season, we are very proud of how the girls have been able to click," said team captains Lauren Hayes, Annika Rojas, and Luci Consigliere. "We've been able to understand one another's games and as for the freshmen they have already progressed in understanding the collegiate level of play. We were so excited for the win today and to have the chance to compete in the PSAC tournament."
The PSAC Tournament expanded to four teams from both the East and West this season, an increase from last year when only three teams from each division qualified. The match-ups for the first round are structured as follows: the No. 3 seed from the East travels to face the No. 2 seed from the West, the No. 3 seed from the West faces the No. 2 seed from the East, the No. 4 seed from the East takes on the No. 1 seed from the West, and the No. 4 seed from the West matches up with the No. 1 seed from the East.
The Marauders are expected to travel to face the Crimson Hawks of Indiana (Pa.) on Tuesday, April 8. Indiana (Pa.) enters the match-up unbeaten in conference play at 5-0 and riding an impressive 11-match winning streak.
