MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - After head coach Matt Helsel called doubles play their "Achilles heel" last week, the Millersville University women's tennis team responded in a big way, securing a narrow 4-3 victory over Salem University behind two crucial doubles wins. Lauren Hayes, Marian Hayes, and Mia Gassert each earned victories in both singles and doubles, while Annika Rojas teamed up with Gassert to contribute to the doubles success.
L. Hayes and M. Hayes added to their impressive season with their ninth doubles win, defeating their opponents 6-4. Gassert and Rojas followed with a strong performance, earning their fourth win by a score of 6-3. Duda Coutinho Barreto and Luci Consigliere were just shy of completing the sweep, battling but ultimately falling 6-4.
In singles, L. Hayes delivered a dominant performance, earning her sixth win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. M. Hayes continued her strong campaign, improving to 11-3 on the year with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Gassert also secured a point for the Marauders, winning 6-4, 6-1. Rojas battled into a third set but ultimately fell just short, dropping her match 6-4, 6-2, 1(6)-0. Consigliere and Barreto both faced tough match-ups, falling 6-1, 6-0 and 6-4, 7(1)-6, respectively.
The Marauders continue to fight for a spot in the PSAC tournament as they host the Huskies from Bloomsburg on Saturday, April 18th.
