East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Millersville University's women's tennis team fell into an early hole during doubles play against East Stroudsburg University and couldn't recover, dropping the match 6–1. Marian Hayes secured the Marauders' lone point with a hard-fought three-set victory.
Luci Consigliere and Duda Coutinho Barreto turned in the most competitive doubles performance of the day, narrowly falling 7(2)–6. Lauren Hayes and Marian Hayes dropped their match 6–3, while Mia Gassert and Annika Rojas were defeated 6–4.
The Marauders pushed three singles matches to a deciding set but managed just one win. M. Hayes earned Millersville's lone point, rallying for a 7(1)–6, 1–6, 1(7)-0 victory after dropping the second set. L. Hayes and Gassert each took their opening sets but were unable to hold on, falling in three sets. Consigliere and Barreto were competitive but dropped their matches in straight sets, 6–0, 6–4 and 6–1, 6–3, respectively. Annika Rojas battled in the first set before falling 6–3, 6–2.
"Doubles has been our achilles heel all year and today was no different," said Matt Helsel. "We dig ourselves a hole and it's too big by the time we get rolling. That just doesn't work. We can't start slow at this level and expect to make up for it later."
The Marauders are back on their home courts April 15th when they host Salem at 2:00 p.m.
