MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville University women's tennis team earned its first win of the spring season in a thrilling 4–3 victory over Goldey-Beacom College. Marian Hayes, Lauren Hayes, and Annika Rojas each secured key singles victories, with Rojas clinching the decisive point to clinch the match for the Marauders. This victory marks the Marauders' first win over Goldey-Beacom since meeting in October 2012.
The Marauders benefited from two defaults by Goldey-Beacom College, earning one win in singles and one in doubles.
In doubles action, the duo of Marian Hayes and Mia Gassert clinched the overall doubles point with a hard-fought 7-6(4) victory. Meanwhile, Annika Rojas and Duda Coutinho Barreto narrowly missed completing the sweep, falling 6-4 in a tightly contested match.
In singles play, Callie Culbertson was the first Marauder to fall, dropping her match 6-1, 6-2. M. Hayes—now 3-0 in singles this spring—earned a singles point for Millersville with a strong 6-2, 6-1 victory. Annika Rojas followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win, clinching the overall match for the Marauders. Barreto and Gassert battled in competitive matches but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-4, respectively.
The team played well today, said head coach Matt Helsel. We haven't beaten GBC in a while, so that win is nice. It's good to have a tough win before conference play starts.
The Marauders look to pick up their first conference win March 24, when they host the Golden Rams from West Chester University.
