MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville University soccer team defeated Slippery Rock 2-0 on Sunday. The Marauders scored once in each half and held Slippery Rock to five shots, including one after halftime.
'Ville paired a 13-5 shot advantage with a shutout, allowing Slippery Rock three shots on goal while Gavin Massimi finished with three saves. Matias Schmidt opened the scoring with the game-winning goal, and Zander Leik added an assisted goal from Louis Wright as the Marauders put four shots on frame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marauders broke through in the first half in the 21st minute, when Schmidt scored to put the home side ahead 1-0. The goal followed a stretch in which 'Ville earned three corner kicks and had shots from Haven Thomas, David Zea and Wright. Massimi made three saves, including two during a late Slippery Rock sequence, and the Marauders carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
"In the post season defending is always a premium." said head coach Steve Widdowson. "But it's required from every player, not just the back four. I thought everyone committed to the work and effort required to put a shutout on the board and that gives everyone the freedom to then go and play."
'Ville added to its lead in the 75th minute when Leik scored off Wright's assist, moving the score to 2-0. Earlier in the second half, Brian O'Neill and Juan Ortiz Escobar recorded shots for the Marauders, and Wright later hit the top woodwork at 81:29 as 'Ville closed out a 2-0 win.
"Overall, it was a really good game of soccer between two really good teams. I was proud of every players efforts today and everyone contributed to our success, regardless of minutes played. Now we get back to work as we look to continue our post season progress." stated Widdowson.
