EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -Â The Millersville University soccer team played East Stroudsburg to a 0-0 tie Wednesday. The Marauders protected the shutout through five East Stroudsburg attacking actions late, keeping the match scoreless.
The Marauders put five of their 10 shots on goal while limiting East Stroudsburg to one shot on frame among nine attempts. East Stroudsburg's goalkeeper made five saves, while Gavin Massimi needed one save to complete the Marauders' shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marauders generated the main attacking stretch of the first half, putting four shots toward goal but coming away without a finish. Brian O'Neill and Juan Ortiz Escobar each forced saves from Phil Sykes, and 'Ville added corners around shots by Kehmar Green and Louis Wright. The Marauders earned six corner kicks in the half, which ended scoreless.
'Ville pushed late in the second half with three shots and a corner while the match was tied 0-0. Nolan McCarty and Drew Jones put shots on frame in that span, but Sykes saved both attempts. East Stroudsburg followed with three shots in the closing minutes, and the Marauders kept the half scoreless as the match finished 0-0.
"It was a hard fought battle between two good teams." said head coach Steve Widdowson. "After a tough week last week, we have to take this as a positive step forward. While we know we can play better overall, this was a good step forward in re-establishing our identity. I thought we moved the ball much better, defended with much more passion and created a few good chances. Hopefully this gives us more confidence moving forward and we can clean up our sharpness over the rest of the regular season ready for the post season."
