WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Millersville University soccer team scored twice in the first half and defeated West Chester 2-1 on Wednesday. The Marauders finished with a 16-9 shot advantage, though both teams put six attempts on goal.

Brian O'Neill opened the scoring off a Zander Leik assist, and Drew Jones added the second goal from Nolan McCarty for his first collegiate goal. Gavin Massimi's five saves helped the Marauders protect the one-goal result.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marauders converted their first-half pressure into goals from O'Neill and Jones, with O'Neill scoring off Leik's assist in the 22nd minute and Jones finishing from McCarty in the 29th minute. Earlier, 'Ville generated five shots and a corner, while Massimi made a save on West Chester's look. The half ended with the Marauders holding a 2-0 scoring edge.

'Ville protected its lead through the closing stretch after Maksym Komperda scored for West Chester in the 79th minute to make it 2-1. Earlier, the Marauders pushed forward with five shots and two corner kicks, including a McCarty shot stopped by a team save and a Leik attempt saved by Jaden Howard. Massimi made four saves in the half, including one on Komperda, as 'Ville finished off the 2-1 win.

"We were able to pick up a massive three points on the road against a strong West Chester team." said head coach Steve Widdowson. "We defended well throughout the game and both of our goals came on the back of great defensive work. However, I thought we could have moved the ball better and controlled the tempo better in the second half. We battled and showed continued resiliency but we still want to improve. There are definitely things we can do better and we will keep working as there are a lot of tough games still to come."
