MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville University soccer team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 2-1 on Saturday at Pucillo Field, with Roy Parkyn scoring from Louis Wright's assist in the 86th minute to move the Marauders ahead after the teams were level at 1-1.
Parkyn's late goal moved 'Ville in front, and he also assisted Drew Jones on the Marauders' other goal. Millersville finished with 11 shots and seven on goal compared with eight shots and three on goal for St. Thomas Aquinas, with a tied stretch that included five Marauders shots and three corners before Parkyn's game-winner.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marauders struck first in the opening minutes, with Jones scoring off Parkyn's assist in the fourth minute for a 1-0 lead. St. Thomas Aquinas answered in the 22nd minute on Jalen Moni's goal, assisted by Nicolas Pavlou. Omar Warthen Jr. put a shot on frame later in the half, but the first half ended tied 1-1.
'Ville broke the tie in the 86th minute when Parkyn scored off Wright's assist, giving the Marauders a 2-1 lead. The goal followed a sustained push that produced five shots and three corner kicks between the 75th and 84th minutes while the score was level. Millersville allowed no goals in the second half and closed out the 2-1 win.
"Even though this was a non-conference game, it was still a really big game because of playing a strong opponent and the future NCAA tournament qualification possibilities." said head coach Steve Widdowson. "The most pleasing thing today was how the team was able to wrestle control back as the game went on. This is what we have struggled to do recently and we have put work into rectifying it which paid off today. We knew we had resiliency but today we backed it up with quality and game management to find a deserved late winner. It was a great team effort and a really enjoyable game played out by two good teams."
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Parkyn logged the game deciding goal
• Jones finished with one goal
• Gavin Massimi finished with two saves
