MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville Marauders defeated Shippensburg 3-0 on Thursday at Pucillo Field. Millersville claimed the PSAC Eastern Division title for the second consecutive year. The Marauders finished with a 27-2 shot advantage, including 15-0 in the second half.
The Marauders recorded 27 shots and 10 shots on goal while holding Shippensburg to two shots and one on frame, with Shippensburg making seven saves. That shot volume carried through multiple attacking stretches, including one sequence with eight shots and four corners, while Gavin Massimi made one save in the shutout.
"This was a big achievement for the team, especially back to back when the pressure of expectation is at its highest." stated head coach Steve Widdowson. "We have found different ways to be successful this season and shown resiliency throughout. While our performance was overall pretty strong today, I thought we lacked fluidity and rhythm at times but we kept plugging away to eventually find the goals we needed. Defensively we are strong and that is an essential ingredient to be successful."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Roy Parkyn converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute to put the Marauders in front in the first half. 'Ville continued to create chances around the goal, including saved shots by Matias Schmidt, Drew Jones and Haven Thomas, and Alex Delavan later hit the woodwork. Massimi made a save on Shippensburg's best recorded chance, and the Marauders took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Marauders extended their lead twice in the second half, with Schmidt scoring off Roy Parkyn's assist in the 60th minute and Omar Warthen Jr. finishing a Travis Hemphill assist in the 75th minute to make it 3-0. 'Ville kept pressing after the third goal, generating eight shots and four corners. The match ended with the Marauders ahead 3-0.
"The message will be simple which will be to keep looking forward, keep working hard and keep looking for ways to continue to improve. Everything is in our hands. Now it is up to us to show the correct mentality, attitude and workrate to keep the journey going as long as possible." said Widdowson.
