MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville University women's tennis squad dropped to the Bison of Bucknell University 5-2 for senior day. The lone senior,
Sophie Lanius lost her singles match 6-3, 6-3.
The Bison controlled doubles play, securing the opening point of the match. Millersville's closest contest came from the pairing of Lanius and
Mia Gassert, who fell 6-2.
In singles action,
Marian Hayes and Gassert earned wins to put two points on the board for the Marauders. Hayes claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory, while Gassert followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Lauren Hayes battled hard in her singles match, narrowly dropping the second set 6-4.
Annika Rojas,
Duda Coutinho Barreto, and Lanius faced tough competition in their singles matches, ultimately falling to their opponents as the Bison secured the overall team victory.
"We played well today, particularly in singles," said tennis coach
Matt Helsel. "I thought we turned a corner, in a good way, at the Cal match last week. We competed hard that day and we brought that again today. We're tough, and the caliber of our opponents is only going to make us even tougher. We're a better team than we were two weeks or two months ago and we're only going to keep improving. Gassert is playing well and so is Hayes, 2 freshmen with immense talent. Big shout out to Lanius, our lone senior. What a warrior she has been for 4 years. She's a player whose relentless effort is something that is so constant it becomes expected and taken for granted, and I hope we've all learned from her how to bring that each day. We'll miss her but we're thankful for what she's done for the program and the example she's set."
The Marauders are back on the court Wednesday, Mar 18 when they travel to face the Rams from Jefferson.
