ELKINS, WV. - The Millersville University women's tennis team opened its spring season with a narrow 4–3 loss to the Senators from Davis & Elkins. The Marauders came close to securing the win but ultimately fell just short in the tight matchup. Marian Hayes and Lauren Hayes led the way for Millersville, earning a victory together in doubles before each picking up wins in their respective singles matches. Annika Rojas also contributed a point for the Marauders, battling through an extra set to defeat her opponent in a hard-fought singles victory.
L. Hayes and M. Hayes defeated their doubles opponents in dominant fashion, earning a 6–0 victory. Mia Gassert and Luci Consigliere narrowly missed in their doubles match, falling 6–3, while Duda Coutinho Barreto and Annika Rojas also came up short with a 6–2 loss.
In singles play, L. Hayes picked up the Marauders' first point of the match, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-3. M. Hayes kept the momentum going with another singles victory, winning 6-1, 6-3. Gassert made a late push in her match, forcing a third set after taking the second 7-5. She ultimately fell just short, dropping the deciding set 6-3. Consigliere and Barreto struggled against their opponents, with both losing the first set 6-3. Consigliere battled in the second set but came up short, falling 7-5. Rojas rallied in her singles match after dropping the first set, bouncing back in dominant fashion with 6-2 and 6-1 wins in the final two sets to secure her victory.
"I congratulate D&E," said Matt Helsel. "This is the type of match we're used to winning and they got us this time, so good for them. We just need to get better, just having the talent isn't enough. We have to push ourselves to the next level. If we do, I'm excited to see what we're capable of. If we don't, we're a pretty ordinary team. The good news is that the choice is ours."
The Marauders continue their spring break on the road, traveling to face the Bobcats from Frostburg State.
