Marian Hayes' comeback victory pushes women’s tennis over California (Pa.)

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville University women's tennis team (1-1) rallied for a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over California University (Pa.) (3-1), clinched by Marian Hayes' tiebreak win in the final singles match for a team score of 4-3.

In doubles play, Sophie Lanius and Mia Gassert earned the first win for the Marauders with a commanding 6-1 victory over L. Schreiber and I. Heacox. Shortly after, M Hayes and Lauren Hayes secured their match, giving Millersville the overall doubles point against the Vulcans.

In singles action, Gassert notched her second win of the day in dominant fashion, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-1. L Hayes followed with a hard-fought first-set tiebreak win (7-6 [4]) before her opponent, T. Isherwood, retired in the second set. The Vulcans responded by taking the next three singles matches, evening the overall score at 3-3. In the decisive final match, M Hayes bounced back after dropping the first set 6-4 to D. Mungo, rallying to win the next two sets and secure the 4-3 victory for the Marauders.

"Obviously Marian was the hero today, coming from behind to save the day for us, but it was truly a great team win," said Matt Helsel. "That's a tough Cal team so it's a great win to have. We played much better doubles today than earlier in the week and that was certainly an important point. We still have room to grow. We haven't played anywhere near our best tennis yet, but today was a great result against a good opponent."

The Marauders are back on their home court on Saturday, Oct 18 when they host the Bison from Bucknell University for senior day.
