Marauders split doubleheader against Jefferson, drop game two in extras

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Millersville Marauders split their Sunday doubleheader against the Jefferson Rams, winning game one by a final of 8-4 before losing game two 1-0 in an extra inning affair. The Marauders hit four home runs in game one and Morgan Crutcher threw seven shutout innings in game two before an error allowed Jefferson to walk off with the win.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE: Millersville 8 – Jefferson 4
  • The Marauders struck first as Gabby D'Ottavio drove in Gabi Turner in the top of the first.
  • The Rams answered back, tying the game with a run in their half of the first.
  • Aleese Angelo gave the Marauders the lead for good in the second, as she bashed a solo home run to right-center, putting 'Ville ahead 2-1.
  • The Marauders opened the third with a solo home run from Kendra Bumgardner. Turner added to the Marauder lead, as she homered for the third consecutive game. Her two-run blast brought Hunter Little in to score and made it a 5-1 game.
  • Jefferson was again able to respond, tacking on their second run of the game on a pair of hits, cutting the deficit to three. The Rams continued to close the gap in the fifth, scoring another pair of runs off of Alex Schaefer, making it a 5-4 Marauder lead.
  • Bumgardner would take over midway through the fifth and threw three shutout innings to earn her first save of the season as she scattered three hits while picking up one strikeout.
  • Millersville added two insurance runs in the sixth as Little connected on a home run to left, plating Bumgardner.
  • A bases loaded walk to Turner in the seventh brought the final Marauder run in to score.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Schaefer improved to 4-5 with the win.
  • Millersville outhit Jefferson 12-8. Both teams committed three errors.
  • The Marauders mashed four home runs, one off of their season high of five. Millersville also had 26 total bases as an offense, three off their season high of 29 which came against Walsh on March 7.
  • Both pitching staffs would pick up just two strikeouts each in the game.
  • Turner again led the offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, home run, walk, and three RBIs.
  • D'Ottavio and Angelo also had multi-hit games for 'Ville.
  • Little and Turner are both slugging over .700 on the season.
 
GAME TWO: Jefferson 1 – Millersville 0
  • Neither team was able to score in regulation, sending the game to extras in a 0-0 tie.
  • Morgan Crutcher pitched seven shutout innings to start her outing, keeping the Marauders in the game as she scattered four hits while walking no batters.
  • Jefferson would score the winning run in the bottom of the eights on a throwing error by Crutcher, ending the game in a 1-0 loss.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Millersville fell to 0-2 in extra-inning games in 2022.
  • Crutcher has now gone 7+ innings in three straight starts, allowing just four runs (three earned) to score over 21 1/3 innings in the past week.
  • The Marauders were shut out for the third time this season.
REACTION FROM HEAD COACH JEN PROBST:
On the offense in game one: "You could really feel the "pass the bat" mentality back in game one. We had some great contribution from the bench."
 
On another strong outing from Crutcher: "Morgan has been getting stronger game by game. It was really unfortunate we couldn't punch a run in game two because she threw well enough to win."

UP NEXT
Millersville return to Seaber Stadium for a doubleheader against Bloomfield this Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
