Softball splits with Shippensburg

Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville University softball team split its doubleheader with Shippensburg Friday afternoon. The Raiders claimed the 10-0 triumph in game one. The Marauders had a seven-run fourth inning in game two for a 10-1 victory.
Both games concluded with the 10-run rule after the bottom of the fifth inning. The Marauders recorded 12 hits on the day.
Junior Maggie Murphy led the offense by going 3 for 4 with three RBIs. In the second game, Murphy had her third three RBI game of the season.
Game 1
Shippensburg's bats showed up with a four-run first inning. Then, the Raiders' offense was back again in the top of the second inning with a three-run inning. The Marauders could not battle back from the early deficit.
In the top of the fifth inning, Shippensburg's Kendall Geis singled to score one and make it 8-0. Tara Bicko extended the Raiders' lead by the pitcher's wild throw to first base. Two runners scored on that play to earn a 10-0 lead.
The Marauders' best scoring chance was in the bottom of the fourth inning when there was bases loaded with one out. Shippensburg's Taryn Wilson got senior Megan McCurdy to pop out to shortstop. Then, freshman Devan Mascuilli flew out to left field to end the scoring chance.
Wilson allowed only four hits, two walks and striking out four batters. Wilson earned her 14th complete game and her third shutout of the season.
Game 2
The bottom of the fourth inning was the turning point of Millersville's 10-1 win. Murphy had a key single that brought in three runs due to a throwing error by the right fielder. Murphy's single brought the lead to 8-1. Freshman Faith Willenbrock singled up the middle and Murphy scored on another errant throw. Willenbrock advanced to third on the throw. Senior Kaelyn Buskey finished the scoring with a single up the middle, scoring Willenbrock.
Earlier in the fourth, pinch hitter sophomore Macy Koontz was hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Later, freshman Allie Janowiak singled up the middle to score one and make it 5-1.
A two-run bottom of the third inning brought Millersville on top, 3-1. Sophomore Rebecca Blatt singled to left field, and McCurdy from second base. Next up, Murphy doubled to right field to plate Blatt from first. Willenbrock hit her eighth home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning, tying her with Blatt for the single-season home run record.

Senior pitcher Cassidy Pinchorski gave up two hits, allowed only one run and no walks. Pinchorski earned her third complete game and her fourth win of the season.
