Millersville, Pa. -- The 15th ranked Marauders won their conference opener 1-0 against Seton Hill and extended their unbeaten streak to six games and their winning streak to five games Friday.
Freshman Matteo Adiletta broke a scoreless stalemate in the 74th minute. Jaxon Burns had the ball in the box and passed it to the left to Adiletta who fired a rocket past Seton Hill goalkeeper Austin Iddon and into the back of the net. It was Adiletta's second goal of the season and first game-winner.
The Marauders locked down on defense after Adiletta's goal and held the Griffins to two shots in the final 16 minutes. Sophomore Darian McCauley and the Millersville back line of Finsterbush, senior Ahmed Qaisi, senior Kody Eberly and freshman Nathan Maynard earned their third clean sheet of the season.
Millersville improved to 5-0-1 (1-0) PSAC with the victory.
The Marauders and the Griffins played a largely uneventful first half. Neither team recorded a shot until the 26th minute when senior Ryan Phelps shot the ball above the crossbar. The Marauders threatened late in the first half as Burns forced Iddon to make a tough save in the 42nd minute. Despite Millersville's late attempts the 0-0 score held through the end of the first half.
The Marauders threatened early in the second half. The Millersville offense forced four corner kicks in the 55th minute. Millersville's best chance of the early second half happened in the 58th minute after senior Jesse Zimmerman drew a foul 35 yards away from the goal. Phelps blasted his free kick to the right corner where junior Kyle Finsterbush waited to head the ball, but his attempt was barely saved by Iddon.
Phelps had to leave the game after receiving a knock in a challenge against Seton Hill defender Liam Kettle. Kettle then stepped over Phelps and appeared to catch Phelps with his leg which drew the ire of the Millersville players and fans and raised the tensions in the game.
Millersville looks to improve its streaks at East Stroudsburg Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m.
