Red zone and third down defense key in Marauders' loss to East Stroudsburg

Millersville, Pennsylvania - Redshirt freshman quarterback Tony Staffieri rushed for 162 yards and threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate start, but Millersville came up empty on five separate trips into the red zone, and East Stroudsburg converted 11-of-16 third downs in topping the Marauders 38-23 Saturday afternoon.
East Stroudsburg's (4-2, 2-1 PSAC East) 11 third-down conversions totaled 259 yards, hitting nine plays of 10 yards or more. Three of the team's five touchdowns came on third down. Millersville's offense churned out 472 yards of total offense--its most since the 2014 season opener--and picked up 23 first downs. Staffieri's 408 yards of total offense came within 39 of Drew Folmar's single game Marauders' record set in 1999. But the Marauders' attack bogged down deep in East Stroudsburg territory. Twice Staffieri was picked off in the red zone and was stripped on a sack once in the fourth quarter. The Marauders also missed a field goal in the second quarter, and turned the ball over on downs after reaching the 1-yard line on the final drive.
ESU's Robert Healy entered the game as the PSAC's top rusher and totaled 163 yards and three touchdowns. He scored less than two minutes into the game after taking a screen pass 18 yards on a third down play. Millersville quickly responded with a 35-yard strike from Staffieri to Wiggins. Staffieri and Wiggins hooked up three times in the game, and Wiggins finished with a season-high 144 yards--his fourth career 100-yard game.
East Stroudsburg, however, built a 24-6 lead in the waning minutes of the second quarter, aided by two Marauder drives that ended without points inside the ESU 26. But with three minutes left in the half, Staffieri piloted an eight-play, 77-yard drive that ended on a 10-yard hook-up with Wiggins.
The Marauders opened the second half with the ball and after Tyrone Gibson's first career kick return went 55 yards, the offense reached the ESU 8. But a rush for no gain and a sack pushed the Marauders back to the 12, where Evan Stahl connected on a 29-yard field goal, making the score 24-16.
ESU answered immediately, covering 63 yards in just six plays with Healy scoring from 10 yards out. While Millersville was forced to punt on its next possession, the ball touched an ESU blocker and Gibson recovered at the ESU 37. On the first snap, Staffieri hit a streaking Wiggins in the end zone, cutting ESU's lead to 31-23.
A golden opportunity for the Marauders came one snap later, when Tim Esham stripped ESU QB Bruce Campbell at the 14, and Sean Dugan recovered at the 24. Millersville drove to the ESU 5 and had first-and-goal. But back-to-back sacks and a delay of game penalty pushed the Marauders to the 18. Staffieri was then intercepted on a jump ball intended for Wiggins.
Millersville's next two possessions ended with punts, and East Stroudsburg built the advantage to 38-23 with 6:05 remaining. Millersville's next two offensive opportunities entered the Warriors' red zone but both ended without points.
Wiggins' three touchdowns pushed his career total to 17, moving him into seventh place in Millersville history. Staffieri's 162 yards rushing marked Millersville's first 100-yard rusher since the 2014 opener and the most yards by a Marauder since Ian Sadon totaled 187 in the 2013 season finale. He also had the most rushing yards by a Marauder quarterback in the "Statcrew Era," which dates to 2002.
