The Rock scored touchdowns on the first 10 drives of the game, and all but two of those drives accumulated more than 50 yards. JayJay Jordan, the PSAC's rushing leader totaled 124 yards on 20 carries and scored four touchdowns. DaOne Owens completed 21 of 26 passes for 325 yards and four touchdowns. Millersville struggled to find its footing on both sides of the ball, finishing with 231 yards of offense on 50 plays.Â
"(Slippery Rock is) a good football team," said Millersville head coach Drew Folmar. "I'd like to think they aren't 60 points better than us, but they were today. We have to get some things cleaned up and make sure we are doing everything we can with execution on both sides of the ball. The kids are playing hard, but we're not 11 for 11 on every snap. We aren't getting to the ID's on offense. You have to go 11 for 11."
Slippery Rock extended drives with remarkable efficiency, converting 8 of 13 third down tries and 3 of 5 fourth downs. Millersville, meanwhile, went 3 of 11 on third down and 0 of 2 on fourth down. That resulted in Slippery Rock running 30 more plays than the Marauders.Â
"Sometimes on defense we were right there and missed a tackle," said Folmar. "Good on (Slippery Rock) for making the plays. We tell the guys all the time to win in space. It's the hardest thing in football to do is make a play in space. Overall, we have to do better in our one-on-one battles. We aren't winning enough of those."
For Millersville, six freshmen played prominent roles on offense and in the return game and 14 first and second year players made at least one tackle on defense. One of those freshmen, Jayden Walters, hauled in three catches for 103 yards and scored a 60-yard touchdown in which he made a contested catch, broke tackles and out-ran defenders to the end zone. Walters has recorded 199 yards and two scores in the last two games.Â
"The lessons are that none of us like that feeling, and it starts with prep on Sunday," said Folmar. "You reap what you sow through the week and through the year. We have to make sure we are working Sunday through Saturday morning. We have a lot of young guys learning what college football looks like. They've had a baptism by fire against some darn good football teams. It's a different game than they've been playing. There is much more to it from a mental and physical aspects. In the short term, we have to learn what it means to prepare and get ready to play on Saturday."
Millersville opens PSAC East play on Sept. 26 at West Chester.Â
