The Marauders generated 19 passing first downs as part of 25 total, completed 36 of 51 throws for 343 yards and converted 8 of 16 third downs. 'Ville also held Shippensburg scoreless in the third quarter while twice reaching the end zone.
"We ask the guys every week to play their butts off for 60 minutes, snap to whistle, until the clock hits zero," head coach Drew Folmar said. "It's not for lack of effort, and we'll keep coaching them and pushing them and try to put them in the right position to be successful."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marauders answered Shippensburg's two early touchdowns with a 12-play, 79-yard drive that Ryan Zeltt finished with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Kyreek Bradshaw with 2:57 left in the first quarter. The drive took 6:23 off the clock, and 'Ville followed by forcing a punt on Shippensburg's next possession. Shippensburg led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Marauders were held scoreless, and Shippensburg's 17-yard touchdown pass followed by the extra point left 'Ville trailing 21-7. The Marauders responded with a 15-play, 75-yard drive from their own 8, with Zeltt completing third-down throws to Isaac Sines and Caileb Howse, but the possession ended on downs at the Shippensburg 17 with 52 seconds left.
"You never get back those missed opportunities," Folmar said. "We had opportunities in that game, and that's life. … We've got to take advantage of some of those."
The Marauders scored twice in the third quarter, with Mekhi Ashby breaking a 45-yard touchdown run before Zeltt hit Bradshaw for a 20-yard touchdown to pull within 21-20. The second score capped a 10-play, 62-yard drive that included a fourth-down completion to Nakhi Bullock at the Shippensburg 23. 'Ville held Shippensburg scoreless in the quarter, though Shippensburg had the ball at the Marauders' 18 when the third quarter ended.
In the fourth quarter, the Marauders fell behind 35-20 after Shippensburg scored twice by the 10:47 mark, and their first two full possessions of the quarter ended with an interception and a turnover on downs. Zeltt then led a 14-play, 88-yard drive, finishing it with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Walters before Gryffin Mitstifer's extra point made it 35-27 with 2:44 left. Shippensburg picked up a late first down and ran out the clock.
For Folmar, the next step for Millersville is turning those opportunities into game-changing plays.
"If we want to get over the hump, we've got to be able to make the routine plays, and then we've got to be able to make the contested plays," Folmar said. "That's the next step."
Folmar also expressed confidence in Zeltt, who completed 36 passes for 343 yards while leading the Marauders' passing attack.
"He made some good throws, some big throws, and we're gonna need to make some more big throws and good throws down the road," Folmar said. "There's no lost confidence in that."
