The Marauders' defense recorded a season high four sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery. Against the PSAC's No. 1 ranked defense, Millersville finished with 72 rushing yards and 57 passing yards, converted 4 of 13 third downs and lost two fumbles. Kutztown finished with 416 yards, 23 first downs and a 36:18-to-23:42 time-of-possession advantage while converting 11 of 16 third downs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marauders spent most of the first quarter playing from behind after Kutztown's 93-yard kickoff return set up a touchdown, and the visitors later added a 41-yard scoring pass and a 39-yard field goal. Millersville picked up four first downs, including a 16-yard Ryan Zeltt completion to Kyreek Bradshaw and an 11-yard Caileb Howse run, but its three possessions ended in two punts and a lost fumble. Damonte Foreman and the duo of Trevor Fuhs and Max Hostetter recorded sacks for the Marauders, who finished the quarter trailing 17-0.
The Marauders' biggest play of the second quarter came on special teams when Kutztown's snap on a punt try sailed into the end zone. Amari Davis pounced on the ball to make the game 24-7. Earlier, Kah'Dyn Gann-Luckett's 54-yard kickoff return helped set up a drive inside the Kutztown 10, but the possession ended with a missed 30-yard field goal. Kutztown added a touchdown with 1:54 left, and Tyson Capers' interception gave 'Ville one more possession before the quarter ended with Kutztown ahead 31-7.
The Marauders were held scoreless in the third quarter, and Kutztown added a 24-yard touchdown pass from Judd Novak to Noah Kracyla before Peter Fiorello's extra point made it 38-7. The Marauders' offense produced one first down and punted on all three possessions, finishing the quarter 0-for-3 on third down. Bryce Beutler broke up two passes and Cory Schaffer added another as the defense forced one punt, but Kutztown had the ball at the Marauders' 16 when the quarter ended.
Kutztown added a 12-yard touchdown pass and extra point before the game finished 45-7. 'Ville moved the chains twice on Tommy Hunsicker runs on its main drive of the quarter, but the possession ended with Roger Staron's 35-yard punt. The Marauders' defense later stopped Kutztown at the Marauders' 25, with Anthony Diaz and Tyler Hurst combining on a third-down tackle for loss before Hurst broke up the fourth-down pass with 30 seconds left.
GAME NOTES
- The Marauders held Novak to his lowest completion percentage of the season and are only the second team in seven games to pick off one of his passes.
- The Marauders' touchdown on Kutztown's bad snap was the team's first fumble recovery score since Aug. 31, 2023.
- Before Saturday, no team had recorded more than two sacks against Kutztown. 'Ville totaled a season-high four. Hostetter led the way with 1 1/2 sacks and a career-high 10 tackles.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM DREW FOLMAR
On the challenge Kutztown's defense presented: "The strength of their defense is in front six. That's not even close. That's why there aren't many teams trying to line up and run the ball against them. But we had opportunities and you can't turn the ball over. We had a drive going and turned the ball over twice. You can't do that against a team like that have a ton of success."
On areas of progress: "We've talked about it since week one, and that's being 11 for 11 every play. We're getting closer, but close doesn't cut it. We gotta be more consistent. But again, the kids, they're learning, they're fighting, you know, they're understanding better what we're trying to do, what the defenses are trying to do, what the scheme is. It all goes together."
