Sheffield Ties Program's Career Home Run Record; Softball Completes Season Sweep of Shippensburg

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville softball team continues to battle for a PSAC Tournament berth and Friday was a big step in the right direction as the Marauders completed a season sweep of Shippensburg on the road thanks to scores of 7-0 and 2-1.
Millersville (19-19, 9-12 PSAC East) pushed its winning streak to four and pulled within two and a half games of the fourth place spot in the Eastern Division behind East Stroudsburg. Meanwhile, Shippensburg (11-16, 6-14 PSAC East) has dropped three straight and seven of its last eight.
In game one, the Marauders scored seven runs on 12 hits and five different batters tallied a pair of knocks behind another dazzling performance from freshman Cassidy Pinchorski. Pinchorski (9-11) won her second-straight start after throwing a complete game shutout with seven hits allowed, not a single walk and five strikeouts.
In the first inning, Jordan Sheffield got the party started with a single to left, stole second and Brittany Smith brought her in with a two-run home run over the scoreboard past the left field fence. That blast gave the sophomore five for the season and six in her career.
When the bottom of the third rolled around, freshman Kelsey Campbell stepped into the box with the bases loaded and cleared them with a three-run double to right that scored Heather Lutz, B. Smith and Danielle DiFilippo. That same frame, Stephanie Kulp tripled in Campbell and the visitors controlled a commanding 6-0 advantage. The scoring continued the next inning when DiFilippo pushed Sheffield across the plate with an RBI single to right field and that is where the score would stand, 7-0.
As noted above, Sheffield, DiFilippo, B. Smith, Campbell, and Kulp each had two hits in the game while Lutz and Mandy Hammond each registered a hit of their own.
Brianna Andraos (10-8) got the ball in game two as has been the custom all season and earned herself the 50th complete game of her career. Andraos gave up one unearned run on six hits with three free passes and two punchouts.
The home team was first on the scoreboard in the second game and brought one run across in the bottom of the first. Millersville answered though with a run in the second and a run in the third and that one-run lead was just enough for Andraos in the circle.
In the top of the second, Lutz doubled to right center and crossed the dish thanks to Gabbie Berry's base knock. The next inning, Sheffield tied the program's career record for home runs with 12 after she crushed one over the left field fence. The junior shortstop now has 12 career round-trippers with a season and change to take sole possession of the record. As a team, the Black & Gold have 18 four-baggers this season as opposed to just 10 in 2014.
For the contest, Berry was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sheffield, Maria Spinosa, Lutz, and Kulp each reached base safetly once by way of a hit.
Sheffield pushed her hitting streak to eight games and in that span she is hitting a red-hot .444 (12-of-27) with seven runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, six RBIs, an .852 slugging percentage, and a .483 on-base percentage. Lutz has also been on a tear as of late with a six-game hitting streak in which she is hitting an even .400 (6-for-15). Millersville's longest hitting streak of the season was nine games and came from Brittany Smith.
Saturday is Senior Day for the Marauders' four seniors including Stephanie Kulp, Gabbie Berry, Gab Ceritano, and Danielle DiFilippo. The four will be recognized prior to the start of the doubleheader and first pitch in game one against Mansfield is set for 1 p.m. at Millersville Softball Field.
