Offense Carries Millersville to Two-Game Sweep of Stonehill and Lees-McRae
3/9/2015 6:57:00 PM | Softball
The Marauders (5-4) were led by Danielle DiFilippo and Gabbie Berry who were a combined 7-of-8 at the plate with five RBI's and four runs scored in their win over the Skyhawks (1-2). In the day's second contest, Pinchorski gave up just two runs, one earned, in a complete game win over the Bobcats (3-13).
In game one, Millersville had a runner cross the plate in every inning except for the first and second frames. In the top of the third, both Berry and Heather Lutz tallied RBI singles before Stonehill tied the game at 2-2 the next half inning, but the Marauders were just getting started. In the fourth, Maria Spinosa singled home Megan McCurdy, Jordan Sheffield doubled in Spinosa, DiFilippo brought across Megan Hallock with an RBI groundout, and Berry scored Brittany Smith with a base knock of her own to make it 6-2.
In the fifth, Spinosa scored on Mandy Hammond's RBI single, Berry/Smith both did so on Melanie Snyder's pinch-hit single and DiFilippo put Millersville up 10-4 when she doubled in Sheffield.
Spinosa and Hammond each went 2-of-4 in the eight and nine spots, respectively. Brianna Andraos (2-2) earned the win with seven innings pitched and gave up four earned runs on 10 hits while walking four and striking out two.
In game two, Lees-McRae struck first with an RBI single in the top of the first but the Marauders answered right away in the bottom of the inning. Sheffield singled to lead things off, moved to second on DiFilippo's sacrifice bunt and then crossed the dish on a Smith double. After Berry walked, Lutz brought in Smith with a single.
The Bobcats knotted things up at two runs apiece in the third thanks to a sacrifice fly but they would never take the lead behind more run support and Pinchorski's arm. In the fourth, Sheffield doubled to score Melanie Snyder and DiFilippo tripled to bring in Sheffield to make the score 5-2 where it would stay until the end.
Sheffield fueled the offense with three knocks from the leadoff spot and Stephanie Kulp went 2-for-3 in the seven hole. In the circle, Pinchorski (3-2) was marvelous once again with the complete game two runs, one earned, on five hits with three punchouts and just one free pass.
Tuesday, Millersville will battle No. 15 Winona State (3 p.m.) and Truman State (7 p.m.). Live stats for the second game will be available here.
