Clermont, Fla. - The Millersville softball team opened its 2015 campaign on Thursday with a twinbill under the lights in Clermont, Fla., but came out on the losing end of both games against the likes of USciences (3-2) and Assumption (13-0).
The Devils (2-6) used a three-run home run in the fourth inning to overtake the Marauders who then ran into a red-hot Greyhound offense in game two. Assumption (7-1) averaged nearly eight runs per game entering the contest with Millersville and its seven wins have come by an average of eight runs per game.
In the opener, the Marauders struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. With one out in the frame, freshman Jamie Trewhella singled and stole second. After leadoff hitter Jordan Sheffield popped up to the pitcher, Danielle DiFilippo singled home Trewhella and Gabbie Berry made it 2-0 with an RBI double. The next half inning, USciences' Brittany Granahan put the Devils ahead with a three-run shot and that's where the score stayed the rest of the way.
Cassidy Pinchorski (0-1) made her collegiate debut by throwing all seven innings and gave up three earned runs on just four hits while walking seven and striking out four.
In the nightcap, Millersville was no-hit by Assumption's Jess Underwood (2-1) who threw all five innings with one walk and five strikeouts while facing two batters over the minimum. The Greyhounds scored two in the first, one in the second, five in the third, and five more in the fifth. Brianna Andraos (0-1) exited after 2.2 innings before Stephanie Kulp threw two and a third innings of relief and only one of her five runs surrendered was earned as the Marauders committed three errors in the game.
Millersville continues play in Clermont, Fla. on Friday and will play Lake Erie (11 a.m.) and West Liberty (1 p.m.).
