GAME OVERVIEW
• Millersville has posted four consecutive shutouts on its way to a 10-0-1 start--the best in program history. The Marauders have recorded eight shutouts on the season and are five away from surpassing a program record set by Matt Langione in 2009. Even more impressive is team has only given up a combined five goals on the season, which equates to a .45 team goals against average. The mark ranks Millersville first in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and seventh in all of Division II.
• Millersville boasts a prolific offense that has scored 26 goals through the first 11 games of the season and its scoring average of 2.36 goals per game ranks them first in the PSAC.
• For the season, Jaime Vazquez has paced the Marauder offensive attack as he ranks first in the PSAC in points (28), goals (13) and game-winning goals (5). The 28 points surpasses a career-high for the Bernville, Pa., native, and his 13 goals scored ties him for first in all of Division II. Dating back to last season, the Marauders are 15-0-1 when Vazquez scores a goal.
• 10 different Marauders have netted a goal on the season, including five freshmen (Jaxson Burns, Chase Flickinger, Dylan Fogerty, Kyle Finsterbush and Danny Kline). Burns, Flickinger, Marcus Frangakis and Ben Johnston have each netted two goals on the year, which ties for second best on the team. Burns, Frangakis and Christopher Sosa are tied for second on the team in points as each has recorded six.
• Justin Torres-Groover and Christopher Sosa have been the best set-up men on Coach Steve Widdowson's club as each has recorded four assists tying them for the fourth-best mark in the PSAC.
• Goalkeeper and captain Kohl Orner has been extremely composed and reliable in net since entering the starting lineup on October 4, 2014. In 2015, Orner has played every minute of each of Millersville's first 11 matches. Orner has been the leader of the backline of defense that consists of the likes of a combination of usual starters Devin Rediker, Tanner Brenize, Kyle Finsterbush, Drew McMenamin and Ahmed Qaisi. Orner has made 40 saves on the year and his eight shutouts is the top mark in the PSAC.
ABOUT THE SERIES
• The team's first met in 1989 with the Vulcans shutting out Millersville in the inaugural matchup by a 2-0 score. In 2014, Cal U got the best of the visiting Marauders and the win proved to be pivotal as it helped them qualify for the PSAC Tournament. The Vulcans were bounced from the tournament in the first round as they were handed a 1-0 loss by Seton Hill.
THE LAST MEETING (CALIFORNIA (Pa.) 2, MILLERSVILLE 1 - SEPT. 28, 2014)
• Behind two unanswered second half goals, the Cal U men's soccer team recorded a 2-1 victory over the visiting Marauders. Millersville struck first in the 26th minute when a Vulcan defender fouled Christopher Sosa just outside the 18-yard box as Sosa was able to convert on the free kick opportunity. However, Cal U answered at the 67:18 mark with a penalty kick goal by Jeffery Kyei. The Vulcans broke the tie in the 82nd minute when freshman Nathan Delgado slid a ball past the Black & Gold keeper giving the home team the PSAC victory.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
• The Marauders will look to take advantage of the youthfulness of the Vulcans goalkeeper. Cal U began the year with senior Aaron Donley as the man between the pipes, but has since given the starting job to freshman Lucas Exner. The German has run with the starting job posting a 1.16 goals against average while also recording a shutout against Wheeling Jesuit. The top offensive players to watch out for on the Vulcans are Jesse Scheirer who has posted six goals and two assists as well as Lubos Kubik who has started every game from right back where he has produced eight assists and a goal.
• In its most recent match, California (Pa.) dominated Wheeling Jesuit as it held a 13-10 advantage in shots and 7-5 edge enroute to a 2-0 shutout over the Cardinals. The Vulcans were able to score first at the 32:57 mark after a corner kick from Kubik found the head of Scheirer and the rebound was eventually collected by Elliot Taylor for the goal. Following a yellow card given to Wheeling Jesuit, Scheirer netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 61st minute following a corner kick from Kubik, which was his second assist of the game, which cemented 2-0 victory.
MARAUDERS NATIONALLY RANKED
• The Millersville men's soccer team continued its upward rise in the National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) Division II Poll on Monday, moving up to the No. 9 spot in the fifth poll of the 2015 season. Millersville remained in the No. 2 slot in the Atlantic Regional rankings. A complete listing of the national poll can be found here. The Marauders are the lone Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference representative within the national polls.
