Marauders Post Fifth-Straight Shutout in Win over Cal U
10/10/2015 8:00:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville men's soccer team shut out its fifth consecutive opponent on Saturday evening to remain unbeaten after a 2-0 win over PSAC foe California (Pa.). Millersville improves to 11-0-1 overall and 8-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The visiting Vulcans dropped to 6-5 overall and 3-3 within conference play.
The No. 9-ranked Marauders were extra fired up with several past Black & Gold greats in the stands as the club celebrated Alumni Day at Pucillo Field. The Vulcans recorded the first shot on goal in the second minute of play, but keeper Kohl Orner was up for the task as he saved the Lubos Kubik attempt. The teams would go on to trade possession and shot attempts with neither team finding the upper hand until the 18th minute.
At the 18:55 mark, forward Jaime Vazquez received a pass within the 18-yard box and was immediately tackled resulting in a penalty kick opportunity. The senior captain converted on his attempt, fooling Cal U keeper Lucas Exner. The goal represented Vazquez's 14th goal of the season which ties him for fourth in program history as well as places him first in all of Division II in goals scored. The goal also was a game-winner and is the fifth of the season for the Bernville, Pa., native who leads the NCAA in that category as well.
The Marauders held a 9-6 advantage in shots within the first half and carried the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the 47th minute, Jaxson Burns added the insurance effort for the home team as he slotted the ball in the bottom right corner of the net for his third goal of the season. Justin Torres-Groover and Jaime Vazquez were credited with the assist. Vazquez finished with a match-high three points and Burns is now second on the team in goals scored.
The Vulcans best opportunity to get on the board came in the 57th minute on a free kick opportunity from the top of the box. Defender Lubos Kubik fired his attempt directly into the crossbar and the Vulcans weren't able to generate substantial offense after the miss.
Orner finished with six saves, his most since the 3-2 victory over Adelphi on Sept. 12. Orner now has nine shutouts on the year, which is the top mark within the PSAC.
Next, the Marauders will travel to Shippensburg on Tuesday, Oct. 13 for a match against the Red Raiders. Shippensburg (5-7. 2-6 PSAC) suffered a 1-0 loss to Mercyhurst on Saturday. Kickoff from David See Field is slated for 1 p.m.
