Men's Soccer Records First Shutout of 2014
10/8/2014 10:08:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Millersville Pa. - The Millersville men's soccer team recorded its first shutout of 2014 Wednesday evening. The Marauders were able to defeat Shippensburg 1-0 on Pucillo Field in a pivotal Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match. Jaime Vazquez was able to net the game winner to improve Millersville to 3-8-1 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC. The Raiders dropped to 3-6-1 overall and 1-4 in PSAC action.
The Raiders out-shot the home team, 15-10. Most of Shippensburg's attempts, however, were in non-threatening positions as they sailed many shots both high and wide of the net. Millersville held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The game-winning effort occurred in the 21st minute when Jaime Vazquez headed home a beautiful cross into the box from Zach Brier. The goal marked Vazquez's third game winning tally of the season and the seventh of his career. The junior midfielder now leads the team in points (11) and goals (5).
Redshirt junior Kohl Orner was outstanding between the pipes barking out instructions to his defenders en route to a career high three saves. The Black & Gold victory could prove to be a momentum booster as they snapped a four-game losing streak just in time for a key stretch in their schedule.
Millersville concludes its four-game home stand Tuesday, Oct. 14 when it squares off against East Stroudsburg. Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
