Clermont, Fla. – The Millersville softball team held on to beat St. Joseph's (Ind.) after losing its lead late in the game Thursday evening. The Marauders are now 5-4 on the season with a two-game winning streak going into the final day of play in Florida.
Alicia Hughes (4-2) earned her fourth consecutive win, but it didn't come as easy.
Millersville (5-4) was hot from the plate to start the game, collecting three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning.
Sara Signore and Davina Kachnovitz led off the inning with a single each. Allison Chew drove in both base runners with her second triple in as many games to take an early 3-0 lead on the Pumas.
St. Joseph's (2-5) threatened in the top of the third inning with bases load and no outs but was only able to get one run before the side was turned.
The Marauders extended their lead to five in the bottom half of the inning when four different players reached base by a single. Taylor Odell-Smith had the most critical single with bases loaded and one out. Odell-Smith drove the ball to the outfield to send two runners home, giving Millersville a 6-1 advantage.
The Pumas rallied in the fourth with three runs and in the sixth with two more to knot the score at 6-6 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Deanna Schneiderreit started off the bottom of the sixth with a single. She would make her way to third when the second baseman mishandled the putout by the third baseman on a sacrifice bunt.
Signore then singled to send home Schneiderreit for the eventual winning run.
Hughes was able to close out her fourth complete game and fourth win of the season.
Because of a rain delay the second game against Post University was canceled. Millersville picked up a replacement game to close out the week with three games on the final day in Florida.
The Marauders take on Northern State (S.D.) at 9:30 a.m., followed by Nyack at 1:30p.m., then wrap up the day with West Virginia Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m.
