Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2
Millersville, Pa. – Nicole Henninger terrorized Millersville pitching for four home runs and her Golden Bear teammates chipped in with two others as No. 24 Kutztown swept the Marauder softball team by scores of 6-5 and 8-6 to open up Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division play at the Millersville University Softball Field on Tuesday afternoon.
There was a golden opportunity for Millersville (11-10, 0-2 PSAC East) to take game one from the powerful Golden Bears (23-8, 3-1 PSAC East). A run in the first and four in the second staked Millersville to a 5-0 lead against Kutztown ace Katlin Arbogast (14-5). Lindsay Hosier doubled twice in two innings and advanced three runners home on the second of those.
Reigning PSAC East Pitcher of the Week Sarah Signore (5-2) blanked the Bears over the first three innings, but a pair of round-trippers got KU back within 5-3 in the fourth. Henninger sent her first bomb out of the park with one out in the inning and Krista Tedjeske hit a two-out two-run shot to help close the gap.
Signore kept Kutztown off the board in innings five and six, but the Golden Bears stole the game out from underneath the Marauders in the seventh. Sitting one out away from the victory, Kutztown catcher Katie Lynch hit a sky-high pop-up to the left side of the infield that fell in fair territory between Hosier, left fielder Jill Golomboski and third-baseman Jamie Motsko. The wind seemed to snatch what looked to be a foul ball and brought it back into play. Nonetheless, Maria Schiavo scored and KU had it down to 5-4 with Lynch at second. That set the stage for Henninger, who stepped up and belted her second home run of the game over the right field fence to give Kutztown its first lead of the game, 6-5.
Millersville threatened with two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the inning, but Arbogast got freshman Anna Libby swinging to secure the win. Neither pitcher had their best stuff, but the two staff anchors still managed to strike out a combined 15 batters in the contest.
It was the Marauders that grabbed the lead in game two as well. Hosier continued to do what great lead-off hitters do by beating out a bunt to get on base early. She would score on a groundout by Kelly Fitzgerald.
More fourth-inning damage was done by Kutztown in the nightcap. Henninger hit a solo home run to start the inning and Kristen Cornelis scored on a Motsko error to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Motsko atoned for her fielding flaw in the bottom of the fourth by driving in Laura DeVoe to knot the game at two.
Unfortunately for the Black and Gold the wheels fell off in the fifth. Kutztown amassed five runs on six hits. Tedjeske had a 2-RBI single and designated player Sarah Couch drilled a three-run homer –her first of the season– to put the Golden Bears ahead for good.
Henninger hit her fourth home run of the afternoon, and ninth of the season, in the sixth. Motsko tried to rally the Marauders by belting a two-run shot out of the yard in the home half of the sixth, but Arbogast would quiet the MU bats after that.
Monica Glomb (7-3) got the win in game two for KU, with Courtney Eckman (3-4) taking the loss for Millersville.
Hosier registered six hits in eight at-bats over the two games. The senior shortstop leads the team with a .382 batting average. She also snagged her ninth stolen base of the season in game one.
The Marauders will have to put the tough conference-opening losses behind them as they host East Stroudsburg tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
